740T Quits when running. 700

I sold my 740T Through a garage several Weeks ago. When I sold it it was running OK. It had been sitting for about a year with only a run now and then to keep the battery uo. A friend borrowed it and ran it for about a Week with no problems.

Now all of a sudden it has taken to shutting down while on the road. When it quits I'm told it's just like someone threw a switch. another mechanic felt it was like it was running out of fuel.

The inline filter has been changed. No change.I remembered something about Fuel pump relays, when I sold the car the Manual went with it.

Any suggestions to restore this faithfull car? (22222 miles)

Thanks!

If you have a model with a Hall affect device on the distributor it could be going bad. Does the tach needle jump a bit when you crank the engine? Could be the injector relay? Are the plugs wet with fuel after cranking? If not could be the relay. To check turn the ignition on and check for 12 volts to ground on one of the plug contacts. If you have a pre '88 could be bad engine wiring harness insulation.

Could be fuel or ignition. What year? Look here.

It's a 1991 740T. I have suggested thay look at the fuel relays and pumps as it now acts like it's running out of gas.

It is not apparently throwing a check engine light.

My non-turbo 940 did the same thing... 700

...and both types share the same Radio (noise) Suppression relay. On the turbo, an RSR problem not only kills injector voltage but voltage to the ignition coil as well.

In my case, the problem was an intermittently bad (open) RSR coil ground behind the right headlight (see pic).

I would not let them replace the pump just because it isn't running when they turn the key. Numerous other things can cause the pump not to get the signal to run. They will wind up just throwing parts at it. Ask if they know how to jumper around the fuel pump relay, that will tell you immediately if the pump is good or bad.

Check the manufacture date on the side of the white relay - (fuel pump). I repair and replace them when they are 10 years old to forestall the failure. Also, the new relays are a different part number (Stribel 898151) and revised with fewer soldered joints. I do not repair the older part numbers or any off brands. Wayne
