getting a clunk clunk noise from right side when coasting and turning right from my front end. had the car checked out but could not find anything loose. then a freind said it may be the strut mounts/bearings? does that sound like problem the mounts can have? and also how do remove the black rubber gear shifter trying to get 1 off at the junkyard. thanks 96 960 volvo

Unbolt the sway bar link at the top and check for warn ball and socket on both ends. They seem to be hard to test unless disconnected.

I haven't removed just a shift knob, grabbing the whole shifter shouldn't cost very much.
