1985 245 Overdrive Fuse 200

Bought Volvo number nine a month ago and the only issue I have not ran into is the Overdrive fuse (Automatic Trans) will blow every few days.

I have resoldered the O.D. relay and replaced the crumbling wire that lays on the top of the transmission. The fuse block has been cleaned and I am using copper fuses. Is there another item in this circut or a wire location I am missing?

Also, the wires to the tailgate do not look the best (at the piviot point) but all the tailgate functions work. These are next on the list to replace.

Thanks,
Mike

    Anybody ever have this happen?

Did not find any info on FAQ.

      Hi Mike,

I haven't seen it happen for any other reason than the one you've already taken pains to prevent -- the rotten insulation on the solenoid wire.

I assume you've looked in and around the shifter box along that same wire you've fixed for a pinch point.

But, my 85 WDM says the heated seats are also using this fuse. OK, so your fuse cover probably says that too, and you don't have seat heaters. The only guess I have is the solenoid itself may have shorted out, especially where the wire goes into it. If there's some way you could drive without the OD (relay pulled out) long enough to satisfy yourself that's what is doing it or prove it isn't, that is how I would approach it.

I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.

        Thanks Art,

Pinch point is good and I replaced the wire from the solenoid plug back to the dash.

Would I be able to test the solenoid with a volt meter? If not I have a good one on the shelf that I will pop in.

        Thanks,
        Mike

If the fuse isn't popped immediately when you start the car, the short is intermittent, and unlikely to be found by "testing things." Proceed using the process of elimination. Start by pulling the relay, which takes the wire and solenoid out of the suspect list. If the fuse remains intact, then pull apart the plug/socket under the car at the solenoid (and put the relay back), then if it remains intact, the labor to procure and change the solenoid should be rewarding. At that point, some will just bypass the solenoid, fluid-wise.

You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you've made up your mind that you just aren’t doing anything productive for the rest of the day.

            Hi Art:

As Mike noted he replaced the wire from the solinoid to the dash and I assume that wire connects directly to the OD relay. Correct?

I have had a "funky" OD relacemnt in an '89 DL 244 when my youngest kept slamming the auto shifter around causing the nylon bushing in the shifter rods to crumble and crush the top of the OD solinoid. My luck this happened when it was 0-5 F and with ice and snow on the ground and I tried to fix it at night lying on my back. I learned the hard way as grit fell into the face of the open port for the OD solinoid and I heard it crush when I assembled the unit. Since then I have cleaned it out and used a pin to attempt to clear any grit but I do not get full OD 4th gear engagement and suspect blockage but it may also be my connection to the wire in the shifter box is not good enough. Would you suggest I run a new wire from the solinoid up to the OD relay as Mike has noted?

Hey Mike I hope you never get stuck in the Lahar mud as you must be near Puyaluup and the park. Nice area except for the potential mud slide!

            Thanks

            Al
