New outer tie rods after 20K? 200

I had to replace the outer tie rods on my '87 today after only about 20K miles of use. I bought them from FCP Groton, but don't remember the brand off hand. They had no markings on them except for one that had "Made in Germany" printed on the rubber boot. The new ones are Volvo parts from Tasca. They have "Volvo" and "TRW" stamped on them. Has anyone had similar experiences with aftermarket parts? I'm hoping the OE part will last longer, 'cause 20K for both of them just doesn't cut it.

20K miles is a very short life span even for the cheapest of cheap. When it comes to TRW brand parts, they are mid-range outer tie rods. My personal favorites are Moog (made by TRW), unfortunately, sometimes you order a Moog part and get a TRW. The way to tell the difference is that the Moog tie rods come with a grease nipple that screws into the bottom, TRW parts do not.

Moog is the way to go.

Yeah, I was kind of missing that zerk fitting for sure. I had hoped the original Volvo ones would be greaseable. Next time.

The factory outer tie rods were not "greaseable", sorry for making up a word! Volvo touted their "service free" joints (no grease required) in their sales literature, they showed a cross section of a tie rod end, it included a steel ball and a white Teflon liner between it and the socket. The factory part was a great idea, except it was only a 60K mile part, add a torn dust boot and that sucker would fail in a week!

Moog and a squirt of grease once in a while is the way to go.
