Control Arm Bushing sleeves,Do I just re-use the ones on the car? 200

I have been putting this off for way too long...

I'm finally gonna get to changing the rear Control Arm Bushings this long weekend, I hope, but the ploy bushings I have didn't come with the outer sleeves like the ones from IPD do. Do I just re-use the ones on the car?

Thanks

Are you talking about the front suspension, the rear position bushings?

You remove the rear bushing assembly from the car and then burn out the rubber from the old bushings. Clean up the sleeve with a 2" wire brush in your drill.

I dont think the drivers side will be too hard to get out. I found chunks of rubber sitting in where the bushing sits!

    Hey Max:
Check out the pictures I posted on my other thread to see the shell being pushed in without any bushing inside. If you use the HomeBrew tool it will push against the poly bushing and could damage it during installation.
    Good luck,

Check out my pictures of using the HomeBrew TAB tool and the IPD bushings.

I had bought the bushing kit you describe, but since the instructions called for burning out the rubber from the installed shells, I was worried about fire. So I returned the kit and ordered the IPD kit. The IPD kit comes with new shells and does not call for fire. A torch being used by me so close to the fuel tank does not make for easy sleeping.
      Good luck,

If you mean the rear trailing arms, then yes, you re-use the original shells. Put them in a vise and start heating the shell with a torch. Once the rubber begins to melt, you can push the bushing out whole. Clean with a wire brush.

No I mean the rear bushings on the control arm

Ah. I confess, when I bought my control arm bushings, IPD was the only vendor selling the SuperPro poly, so I had their kit. But yes, I'm sure the same applies - if you don't have the replacement shell, you'll have to burn/cut/brush the rubber out of the old sleeves.

Do you mean to reuse the original shells taken off the car? They will surely be buggered up and will not fit back in tightly. Maybe NEW OEM bushings could be bought, placed in the vice as you recommend and then burned out. Seems a little expensive.
The poly kit using the OEM shells has the directions of burning out the rubber while still installed in the ears (next to the gas tank). The directions call for a 'heat shield' during the burning...that makes me nervous.
IPD's kit uses new shells..no burning.
Check out the pictures I just posted.
      Good luck,

Why will they be "buggered up"? I did exactly as I described with my own TABs, and they went back in perfectly. I also did not have to pay double for IPD's kit.

How do you think the originals are installed?

I guess my HomeBrew tool is not as precise as the OEM and when I pushed out the original TAB's I had to use a hammer to finish pushing them out.
Did you use the Volvo tool to push them out?
That would be a great saving, since you can burn them out without exposing your car to fire.
I went ahead and did pay 2X the price for the IPD's cuz I was worried about the burning.

I made the homebrew tool (well, my own version of it) and it pulled the bushings out, and put them back in, perfectly. But then, I have a lot of practice machining metal, even in my humble workshop.
