Troubleshooting Blower motor (HELP) 200

what is the best course of action in trouble shooting a fan that doesn't engage. The car was bought with this not working, and I'd like to know some of the first things to check before spending lots of money, or having it done professionally.

    Troubleshooting Blower motor (HELP) 200

    When I replaced mine recently, I discovered that the motor brushes has failed.

    When I was testing the old unit, I connected it to a 12V power source and rotated the shaft, and it started back up.

    If you wanted to give this a try, you might attempt to disconnect the bottom part of the "Clamshell" that encapsulates the fan blades (on the passengers side), and see if you can reach a tool up there and attmept to rotate the fan blade. If it starts up, then there is probably an issue with the blower motor brushes.

    Good luck, and be sure to read Art Benstein's write up, or my post on this topic also.

    If it needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced on a 1990 240, I've probably done it. '90 240DL, 290K looking forward to 300K badge (or sticker??). >>You haven't really worked on a car until you draw blood<< :-}

    Troubleshooting Blower motor (HELP) 200

    When you hear the price the pros charge for doing this job don't be shocked.It may be why the car was sold.Not too many things to check.The fuse,a ground wire,the switch,the relay[everything comes out]or the motor[everything comes out].So read on here how to do it and get ready!

    the bad news is that the regulator/relay for the motor is just as deep in the console as the motor itself. check the fuse panel first? i don't envy you, sorry.

      As others have stated, check main fuse first.

      Then pull off center console and jumper 12 volt directly to the red wire going to the blower motor. There is a connector on this wire that you can separate and apply the 12v there. You will see the wire going to the switch. This will at least allow you to bypass the switch and if you are lucky then you may only have to replace the switch.

      Non dealer price to replace the blower motor, switch and resistor is around $900. You can get all of the parts for about $70.

      I just replaced one of these, and while it is a PITA, I just kept telling myself how I was saving $800!

      Patience is the key when doing this job-allow 1 long day or 2 short days to do this job the first time. Put all of your screws, hardware in little plastic baggies as you go along and label where they came from. Make sure to replace the resistor while you're in there, cause it is just as difficult to do this later.

      Art Bernstein has good info on this.I think it is at cleanflametrap.com
