Clear headlights using turtlewax kit 200 1990

I tried the Turtle Wax kit to remove the oxidation and a tiny bit of yellowing from my headlights, and it actually worked. They look as good as new. I also tried it on my 1994 minivan headlights which were much worse than the 240 and they also look new. The kit was about $10 at Advance Auto. All it took was elbow grease, paper towel, and a soft cloth.

I went out and got one of the kits after seeing this (I chose RainX one) and all I can say is Wow. I had no idea all that yellow was just on the outside. And I thought I knew everything on every shelf at Autozone - I never noticed those kits. For me it worked to about 90%, ie, the yellow is about 90% gone with just a little left. So now I wondering if to get that 10% I need to split the headlites and polish from the inside or if just hitting the outside again will do it. Anybody have any opinions or experience there? I guess the question is does the mechanism that yellows the plastic (uv?) operate thru it to the other side? Or maybe I'm wasting time and the last 10% is actually in the body of the plastic.

The UV damage will go all the way through the lens. You are not likely to see much (if any) improvement by polising the inside of the lens. I have polished many plastic parking meter domes that come "clear", but still have spidery damage lines running through the plastic.

I once used two 3" cloth buffing wheels back to back on a hand drill with jeweler's rouge. This was a set of taillights from a recycling yard. The kind where they had pulled the lights and stored them on metal shelves, face down of course. They were all scratched up. Made them look like new. Unlike doing it by hand, any lettering on the lens fills up with polish so you have to detail afterwards.

Another episode was the thin plastic rear window of a Sunbeam Alpine convertible. I think the thin plastic was damaged all the way through so it only gave miner improvement.

I wonder if any of these Headlight refurbish things would work on a tired Motorcycle windshield. When asked, Nobody on those sites have tried it..
$10 bucks.. much better then what some cost.

Yes, Tony, I'm sure it would help. Polishing plastic is not magic, just takes a lighter touch. Wet sanding with 600/1000 up through 2000 grit sand paper, followed by a buffing or hand polish with rouge or something similar - this is all it takes.

The Turtle Wax kit is nothing but light abrasives and a silicone wipe for the end. It works pretty well, and I'm sure it will polish any plastic.

My father and I just gave this product a shot, and I agree - it works well. It's nothing but sanding pads of very fine grits and buffing compound. The buffing compound reminds me of chrome polish and is probably the same thing. You can achieve the same results with 600-2000 grit sandpaper and a power buffer with the proper rouge, but Turtle Wax does collect all the stuff conveniently in one place.

What's the exact name of the product? Would it work on faded taillights?

I recently used jewler's rouge on our 92 245 tail lights, they shined up beautifully.

A number of years ago I used chrome polish on the tail lights of a 65 T-Bird that were severely pitted and covered in haze. After about an hour, they looked better than the aftermarket replacements that didn't fit quite right.
