Where to get a valve shim kit for valve adjustment 200 1986

I am in need of a valve adjustment for my '86 non-turbo sedan. The stealership wants $510 plus the shims (if they have them they said). What a rip! Anyway, I thought I recall sometime in the past a place that rented the kit and you paid for only the shims that were used. Does anyone recall this or know of any place to get one a a reasonable price? eEuroparts.com will sell individual shims, but I wouldn't know which ones are needed until I got in there then wait for the shims to arrive after ordering them.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I rented from iPD a few times and finally broke down and bought a kit. It was $187 plus shipping from AutoPartsWarehouse. They were the cheapest price I could find, and it appears to be the same kit iPD rents. I buy replacement shims from them too.

You could make your own 200 1986

You'll need a micrometer and exacto knife.

First take measurements. Then do the calculations to see what thickness of shims are required. Remove the discs and see if you can switch them around so that only a shim or two is required.

Then find some foil of suitable thickness (eg. in kitchen), cut it to size and place it under the disc(s) that needs thickening.

NOTE: in removing (and installing) the cam shaft, loosen (and tighten) bolts/nuts in a balanced way, else you may snap the shaft.

Wow, the owner of the dealership must be losing big time at the horse track if they have to charge that much.

I remember when my 240 was new, on the first or second adjustment, all of the shims were replaced, and the car did drive a lot better.

As the years went by, I have had the valve adjustment done less frequently, and only one or two shims needed to be changed.

One time, the Volvo shop manager let me watch while the job was done, and it only took 20-30 minutes total, with one shim being changed.

In Dallas, Texas, the going rate was 1 hr labor, plus the valve cover gasket, plus any shims. So, about $130 + shims.

If it needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced on a 1990 240, I've probably done it. '90 240DL, 289K (Almost There!!) Looking forward to 300K badge (or sticker??). >>You haven't really worked on a car until you draw blood<< :-}

IPD rents the kit, for about $250. $200 of that is a deposit that you get back when you return what you didn't use.
