960 compressor not engaging 900

My new, to me, 1996 960 AC compressor is not engaging when I jump it straight to the battery. Is there any other kind of tests that I can do to it to see what is wrong with it before I remove it and replace it with another?

Thanks,
Jim Lee

There is a thermal cut out mounted to the compressor in series with 12V power to the clutch. Have you connected directly to the clutch with the cut out not in the circuit?

      Thanks for the reply David.
I am not sure what the thermal cutout looks like and how I would bypass it.
      In this picture from ebay:

Is the little black box on the side close to the pulley (front) the thermal cutout? If so how would I bypass it? What I am connecting to right now is the male connector that comes from the compressor.

      Thanks very much,
      Jim Lee

Here's a pic of the thermal bypass that David is talking about (from another thread). DEWFPO
