Beware Damn heater control valve!

I do my normal 20 mile run to work. I stop at Dunkin Dognuts and while in line I see a mist of coolant coming from below the car. I finish drive to work and look under hood to see the frickin Heater valve upper tube has snapped off! Temp guage had just hit the red zone. I replaced the damn thing no more than 35,000 miles ago! Cheap plastic crap! MTC I believe. I just got one from advanced auto and replaced in parking lot. Refilled w/coolant and will give it a go in a bit. Hope I didnt ruin the HG or warp the head!

Haha sorry Art in my frustration I forgot the basics! 1994 940 NA, 218,678 miles. And I was incorrect it had been approx 40k miles since valve last replaced. I just took her out for lunch and it appears I avoided major damage to HG or head. I will post pix tomorrow of the failed valve. Its amazing how thin the plastic is!

I dunno which is worse; the vulnerability you felt, or the 240 series lacking a screen on the cowl, leading to rocker panel compost heaps. I know I would not like getting bits of oily foam blown at me or the headliner falling down, but I suppose the 7/9 folks have no desire to change 240 blower motors. The biggest driver of my model preference is the availability of factory information coupled with all that btdt 240 experience.

Hope your head is OK, and (I guess) make sure the stress is off the plastic when you install it (and watch that hose clamp muscle), keep the pressure low with the 240 rez cap, and consider a coolant level sensor, like from a 960 rez, or one of the magnetic float sensors added-on.

Also don't know why I have this, but my MIL had a 940 for awhile. Wonder how much better is the one the dealer is selling? McDuck (I think) mentioned these are generic parts used by GM as well.

Art, didn't Delco or somebody make a compatible heater water control valve that would substitute for the Volvo application? The OEM unit is around $65; cheapie Sino-crap is $18 or so. Gotta be a better alternative.

Yep, upon closer inspection I probably got a little vigoruos trying to tighten the POS. I felt more confident in this model as it appears to be the old "metal version"...but as you can see the one plastic piece is what failed.
I guess I am just going to have to add it to the list of items I change religiously around 30k miles. Very low res pics but here they are.

Keep an eye on the head gasket issue. I had the same heater valve thing happen to one of my 740s, and it took two or three weeks for the head gasket to let go.
