Hood adjustment woes 200 1986

I'm just finishing up putting my '86 sedan back together from the deer dodging incident. I found and had painted the hood and DS fender. The fender installed without a hitch, but the hood is another animal. I was able to get it bolted up with no problem and when I close it down, it aligns perfectly with the edges of both front fenders. The issue is that it sits jacked up along the entire edge of the windshield side almost 1/2 inch. I sits high and not flush also on both sides of both fenders equally about a 1/3rd of the way towards the front of the car. The original damaged hood did not do this and opened and closed with ease. Where should I start looking to adjust this? I'm almost ready to take to a collision center and have them lay their hands on it and heal it.

    Hey XRay Bob! my '83 after the crunch did the same thing, we fixed it by smacking the hood bolt receiver plate down where the hood attaches by the windshield to where it should be, my body shop told me for the $300 they would charge me thats what they would do, they said the mounting plate was sprung up, if you use a 2 1/2 to 3" pipe to miss everything, and a big !0-15# hammer to pound it down, it will get within 1/8th". Call me if you want me to walk you through it.

      Sorry XRay Bob, bad info on my part, after looking at the hinge points on your '86 from the pix, they are way different than where mine are located. Mine are located on the frame just behind the strut tower, shutting up now.

    I'm going to be one of those that responds with a bunch of questions...

    Did you retain the original hinges or replace them with the hood? If original, could they have been sprung some way in the accident?

    Are the hinges well-lubricated?

    It almost sounds as though the hoods aren't identical. Have you measured the depth of the hood from the inner surface that the hinge lays against to the outer skin?

    Once the hood is shut, can you push down on the trailing edge to make it "closer" to flush? If not, is there anything that could be holding the trailing edge up?

    Are there rubber stops in the rear corners that need to be adjusted downward (or temporarily removed while you sort things out)?

    Is the hood coming down too tight against the cowl?

    Just some food for thought......

      Chris, thanks for the response. The hood did come from the '86-'93 range. and I did keep the original springs that were on my car. A co-worker and I were just discussing this and both thought of sprung hinges. The hood goes down about 1mm and no further when pushed down from the rear. I'm thinking it's a trip back to the boneyard for a set of hinges if that's the case. I will measure the hoods and see what if any differences there are.

      You have loosened the bolts that adjust that portion of the hood and raised up on the front edge of the open hood to force it to the full down position before retightening the same bolts?

          The springs will push the adjustment to it "highest" setting if you have simply loosened the bolts.

          If you loosen the bolts and then make an effort to raise the hood beyond its normal stopping point you will see that the back of the hood is forced down. Once it is down snug the bolts up to see how close you are to the correct position once you lower the hood.

              Hey Xray,

              The sprung hinges answers are legit from BTDT folks whose (car's) PO's have neglected to keep those hinges lubed -- and that is usually the right answer for the hood sticking proud at the rear. Randy saw through to ask the question about the slotted hole adjustment at the hinge mounting. Most of us who have sprung hinges dearly wish we could solve them simply by loosening and adjusting those mounting bolts. Like Randy, I think your solution is right there.

              BTW (by the way) never give up on acronymic code -- just Google it.
