Wiper no park Fix. Before and After. 200

The first warning was two spare wiper stalks in the box of junk from the PO. As time went on I was finding the wipers getting a little more difficult to park after using, and later after first starting the engine. Playing with the wiper stalk would temporally allow the wipers to park. Finally the wipers wouldn’t stop and the only fix was to disconnect the wiper motor plug and use fresh Rain-X. Due to an upcoming inspection I found it in my best interest to repair. Boerre identified the fix in the following post.

Wipers stay on at all times - fix.

Simply, cleaning a dirty and corroded ground path to the motor transmission cover corrected the problem. This allows the park-stop circuit to.....park the wipers. 0000 steel wool worked fine on the motor transmission cover but couldn’t clean the copper ground blade fast enough so I moved to 600 grit paper then coated both surfaces with silicone dielectric grease. I have to place the blame on the galvanized cover, "contact between dissimilar metals should be avoided where electrolyte forming moisture is likely to be present". As Boerre mentioned in his post, the spring tension on the copper ground blade was fine as is.

Wiper no park Fix. Before and After. 200

Very timely post. I just noticed my daughter's '90 240 sedan starting to do that. I hit interval to swipe the windsheild once or twice, then turned it back off and they kept going. And going. And going.

I had assumed more shenanigans with the interval relay. When I got the car it had a big stack of receipts from a garage that had been slowly bleeding the previous owner dry for minor repairs. One of them was to install a junkyard wiper motor to correct a 'wipers won't park' issue. Charged them something like $150 (and I don't think that included the part). And they still weren't working. I looked at them a little bit, assuming that the parking logic was solely contained in the wiper motor, like most others I'd ever seen. But while there are parking switches in the gearbox, they merely send a signal to the relay in the driver's footwell, which is actually what turns the motor on and off. So those guys replaced the motor, it still didn't park, but the receipt was marked 'paid'. Huh?

In any case, I pulled the trim piece in the driver's footwell and saw that the relay, which is usually taped in a 'U' with the wiring so it hangs pointing upward, was dangling straight down. Took it out and took it apart, and it was a pile of rust and corrosion inside, apparently it had been full of water for a while. Which is a little odd, since the rest of the car is very rust free, unusual for this state. Put a used relay on it and it's all back to parking as it should. Taped it back in a 'U', though, so any water that gets in it somehow (condensation?) can drain right back out again.

I should have indicated that this was the fix I found for the no park problem. I took the easiest first look and possible fix after finding the post, knowing there was a relay somewhere tucked under the left side plastic. I think it took me longer to find a T-20 Torx driver than the fix time. Needless to say, I was thrilled considering two 940 in tank fuel pump changes a few weeks ago.

I have a 1992 wiring diagram and the circuits are quite convoluted, showing six functions plus KP1. I think the park circuit goes through a cam via the relay and stalk and keeps the circuit hot through the ground tab until the cam breaks the circuit.

A windshield leak due to an old bad install resulted in water leaking on the fuses. Just a possibility for your leak. BTY, I found that the windshield trim gasket does not keep water out of the void under it. Integrity of the butyl seal between the glass and sheet metal is required.

Very nice and valuable post, Tom. Pictures like that stick in your mind until the need arises. Thanks!
