Very timely post. I just noticed my daughter's '90 240 sedan starting to do that. I hit interval to swipe the windsheild once or twice, then turned it back off and they kept going. And going. And going.
I had assumed more shenanigans with the interval relay. When I got the car it had a big stack of receipts from a garage that had been slowly bleeding the previous owner dry for minor repairs. One of them was to install a junkyard wiper motor to correct a 'wipers won't park' issue. Charged them something like $150 (and I don't think that included the part). And they still weren't working. I looked at them a little bit, assuming that the parking logic was solely contained in the wiper motor, like most others I'd ever seen. But while there are parking switches in the gearbox, they merely send a signal to the relay in the driver's footwell, which is actually what turns the motor on and off. So those guys replaced the motor, it still didn't park, but the receipt was marked 'paid'. Huh?
In any case, I pulled the trim piece in the driver's footwell and saw that the relay, which is usually taped in a 'U' with the wiring so it hangs pointing upward, was dangling straight down. Took it out and took it apart, and it was a pile of rust and corrosion inside, apparently it had been full of water for a while. Which is a little odd, since the rest of the car is very rust free, unusual for this state. Put a used relay on it and it's all back to parking as it should. Taped it back in a 'U', though, so any water that gets in it somehow (condensation?) can drain right back out again.
