Cutout at 1700 rpm 900 1995

While driving normally, the car suddenly slowed, with little power. The car idled fine at about 700-800 rpms but whenever I try to accelerate, it stumbles at about 1700 rpms and won't go much over 2100 rpms. The check engine light came on and I got 2 codes; 1,2,2 and 2,3,3. From what I can find, these codes don't seem to be related to the problem that I'm having. Any ideas?

Dear Tinman2,

Hope this finds you well. If your car has the Rex-Regina ignition/fuel management system, the 1-2-2 code means the air intake sensor has failed, or its signal is not reaching the engine computer.

This sensor is mounted just behind the air intake box. The sensor, usually with a blue plastic shell, has a single connector: press down and pull to release. The sensor twists out of its housing. Inspect the connections, to see if they are corroded. Even if they don't appear corroded, clean them and re-install. See if that helps. If not, the sensor may need to be replaced. I believe it is about a $50 item. You might find one at a salvage yard, for much less.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
