'74 B20F head- Did they come with hardened seats or not? 140-160

I just picked up a '74 B20F head from a 144GL today. I thought they came with hardened valve seats starting in '74. Cleaned some of the carbon up on the exhaust valves, but didn't see any seats. Am I wrong?

Paul

The B-20 heads with hard seat inserts from the factory are pretty rare. You are more likely to find one on a 1975 B 20 fitted to an early 240. I consider them desirable because the factory seats fit the valve bowls much nicer than any machine shop installed seats that I've seen.

Still a very nice head I got for $40. Engine had a worn cam.

Wished it had the seats in it already.

    Hello,

Probably not as unleaded fuel was introduced for the 1975 year model, IIRC.

The seats WERE flamed hardened at the factory for 1975 engines.

The flame hardening only treats a very thin layer of the cast iron.

If the head has every had a valve job, the hardened area is probably gone.

I almost always have hardened seats installed for my customers cylinder head rebuilds.

The only exception being that new seats were already installed or if we are machining for larger valves usually for a performance engine.
