How do I know if my spark plugs are hooked up correctly? They were not connected to the distributor when I got the car.

The quick answer is "It'll run on all 4 cylinders."
How to get them that way is a little more complicated.
Put the engine to top dead center on #1 cylinder with both valves tightly closed.
Pop the distributor cap and see where the rotor points.
Connect #1 spark plug wire to the corresponding place on the cap.
Going COUNTERCLOCKWISE, connect in order #3, #4 and #2.

      I wouldn't say that's "a little more complicated".
      It really is that simple.

I got my spark plugs hooked up correctly, set the gap for the points, removed and rebuilt the two strombergs and finally, got her started. I didn't run her too long though. I still have to set the timing and I noticed the water pump leaks. But she runs! After sitting for seven years!
