Lifetime Warranty, In the computer, don't worry about a receipt......They Lie 200 1986

Hello BBer's

The end all to my wiper motor gremlins from a few years back was a rebuilt one from Advanced Auto Parts. Well it was four of them before I actually got one that worked correctly. Last weekend during the drought ending monsoon we had down here the wipers suddenly making a louder noise and then started stopping in at the top, then the middle, and so on.

Not a problem, lifetime warranty, lets go get a replacement. The store where purchased the motor from "moved" to a new location (they closed it). Apparently and I quote, "some older files did not transfer correctly". They knew all about my battery, but squat about the motor. Then I got that blank look from the counter person when I asked what about my replacement motor. Here it came, "Do you have the receipt?". Counted to 10, and hit them with you mean same receipt where you just told the guy who purchased a compressor not to worry about it, it's in the computer? Finally after 15 min of arguing my case heard the following line, "Well that is an old motor". Who do I need to speak to get this resolved? The manager finally reluctantly ordered a new motor and demanded the core. Now we had a new stand off. You get the core when I get the motor, it is flooding out there (and it was actually flooding out there). He finally relented and did agree that the core could be exchanged when the motor was picked up. New motor is not installed and while the high speed seems a bit slow does stop at the bottom now and at least there are two speeds and intermittent.

Bottom line, won't ever belove the "it's in the computer line" on warranty parts. Did actually find the receipt last night in the Volvo folder, but it is now so faded that you really can't tell what was purchased or when. From now on I will be scanning all those warranty receipts and saving as PDF's with a backup copy on some sort of media.

Just a thought to save others the same PITA.

Regards,

Paul

Lifetime Warranty, In the computer, don't worry about a receipt......They Lie 200 1986

I have noticed that both Autozone's and Advance Auto's computers never have purchase listed over two years old that I have made. Each time I have asked, they tell me something different... "Oh, we went to a new system" "We merged records and some were lost".

But the funny thing is, they always store your information by your phone number, and everytime I buy something, they ask me if my name is Miller - the guy who had my number before me - over 15 years ago. Each time I tell them they can erase that name they say - once it's in the computer, we can't erase it.

In regards to the fading receipts, I thought that was just me... If they are erasing records and giving us disappearing ink on our receipts, this may turn into a class action suit!

The old disappearing ink trick!I think all stores use this crap paper and ink on purpose.I had a problem with my lifetime warranty brake calipers from Autozone. The only problem was THEY changed their part number. So of course my caliper was 'different'.I needed to find the manager who then 'found and cross checked" the old number with the new to get the replacement.I then went back and replaced all 4 calipers before someone there lost their mind again.Had the manager initial the new reciept stating that the old part number and new number were in fact the same product, duh! What a royal PIA. I feel your pain.

I have had the same problem with the ink fading away completely so the receipt is not readable. I got in the habit of using clear packing tape, about 2 7/8" wide, to cover the receipt so ithe ink could not fade away. It works for me. Just a thought, may help someone else down the line.

FCP Groton is famous for illegible receipts (I scan them in high contrast) .... 200 1986

I've yet to have to file a warranty or guarantee claim for an FCP Groton part (knock on wood), but their receipts are always printed so lightly that they're almost illegible! So even a day old, you can hardly read them.

But I scan them (and all my receipts) into my computer as pdf's, and as I scan them, I adjust the image to enhance the writing so that it's nice and dark (think high contrast).

I had the same problem at Kragen/O'Reilly, except it WAS in the computer; I got a new battery.
Yes, I'll go back!

I borrowed a torque wrench a few weeks ago and it was suppose to be in the computer. The stupid wrench was already broken and not in the computer. I had to tell the sales clerk what day and time I picked it up to get my $100. Autozone offers lifetime warranty on their brake pads so when they wear out you get a new set for free. I'm guessing that may not be in the computer when the time comes. It would interesting to ask them next time they pull my file whether or not the warranty is still in there.

not that this adds anything to the warranty issue {been there done that though} give all the glass a good treatment of rainX, especially the windshield. You won't need the wipers above 30mph.
