funky brakes 200

1992 240 sedan , 226000 miles. I was driving daughters car and the brake pedal had to be pushed over half way before stopping the car. After 20 min of driving, the pedal was fine just like our other 240's.
I need to look at this today, help where to start? master cylinder? booster? bleeding?
As always many thanks for the advice.

I've had that happen on two of my cars .... 200

Over the years, I've experienced that on two old cars I've owned -- both times it was a prelude to Master Cylinder(!) failure. It's an intermittant failure of the internal seals on the piston. The first time, I ignored it (because it was only an occasional thing) until it suddenly got much worse; the second time I didn't take a chance.

    Don't take a chance on your daughter's well-being.

It won't show up as a loss of fluid (as seen in the reservoir). The internal seals that "capture" a sample of fluid in the cylinder are compromised, so instead of only forcing the fluid toward the calipers when you step on the pedal, thus building pressure, some fluid leaks back to the reservoir (so the reservoir level doesn't change) and lessens the pressure buildup. Thus, "captured" fluid escapes and its volume diminishes, and the pedal is able to "sink" farther than normal.

You need to replace the master cylinder.

Thanks for the input, the system has not been open so I'm leaning towards the master cylinder as well. I'll have to ask her if the brake fluid has been down.
    Thanks again

If the pedal goes to the floor with steady pressure the master cylinder is bad.

      Adding to Pageda's post 200

That's steady LIGHT pressure. As in at a stoplight. If the seals are going, fluid will get by their rough edges, if the brakes are applied lightly. But if the brakes are applied firmly, the seals are squished against the MC walls enough to cover up rough edges.
