Pinions Seal Replacement: Big Problem? 120-130

I'm in the process of changing out my rear pinion seal. Got the pinion nut off in about 3 seconds with an impact, pulled the pinion off, and was feeling good about my progress.

Then I tried to remove the "dust cover and oil slinger" referred to in the Haynes manual, and encountered a major problem. I cannot seam to get this "dust cover" out. It is pretty well mangled at this point after repeated attempts to pry it out. I'm pretty much stuck until I can get it removed.

Have I made a serious misstep at some point along the way? Is this a part that should be so difficult to remove? It's pretty clear it's trashed at this point . . . are they still available?

    Got it out! 120-130

Got the old seal out. Only took about 3 minutes once I crawled back in there with more tools and resolve. Getting the claw of a small hammer inside and then prying as you would to remove a nail from a board seemed to be the most effective technique. Most of my other "prying tools" that I could easily maneuver around under there would just start flexing before seal would go anywhere.

Getting that old seal out was by far the most cumbersome part of the job (of course, I still have not go it back together yet!).

Pinions Seal Replacement: Big Problem? 120-130

The new seal will look different, and not have the big "hat" around the outer edge. It will work fine.
To remove the mangled seal is easy. Drive the outer edge forward a bit and fold it over, then drive inwards, towards the pinion shaft to collapse the ring that is the press fit part inwards which will reduce it's diameter. Then the seal will come out easily.

Pinions Seal Replacement: Big Problem? 120-130

Thanks for the quick reply and reassurance. My main concern was that the seal I have looks quite a bit different than what I am looking at right now under the car. I was worried I was mangling up something that I wasn't supposed to be mangled. There must be a pretty tight fit between this thing and the axle housing, as I can't really see a seam there at all.
