ac fixin' advice 200

In the process of trying to revive my 1988 240 ac I discovered that I have to jump the one wire that goes to the a/c compressor to get it to run. I know that this probably means either a bad ground wire or a bad clutch. A couple of questions on troubleshooting this:

1. Is there a specific ground wire coming off the compressor, or elsewhere, that I need to check for proper grounding?

2. Is there a way to tell if it is a bad clutch instead of the ground wire or vice versa?

3. If it is a bad clutch how big of a job is it to replace that?

Thanks very much,
Jim Lee

By applying 12v to the compressor you have ruled out a bad ground and a bad clutch.Try jumpering across the two green wires at the dryer. If that starts the compressor you are probably low on refrigerant.

      Thanks Bluedot.
I had read a previous post about testing the clutch and the compressor backwards.
If it ran by jumping that wire it means that my compressor IS running and the clutch IS working. I got it backwards somehow.

I just charged the a/c up with two cans of r-134a and actually felt cold a/c like air coming out of the vents while I had the wire to the compressor jumped to the battery. First thing tomorrow I will try jumping the two green wires at the accumulator. If jumping those wires together does not get the compressor moving should I buy a new switch. It looks like that is a 7 dollar item at my local Advance Auto store.

      Thanks very much,
      Jim Lee

Start at the fuse, checking both sides of the fuse with a test light.Proceed to the thermostat, and the green wires on the nearby relay, with the engine running. If voltage is confirmed along this path, continue checking through the dash and through the firewall. The green wire enters the engine compartment and travels toward the compressor along the intake manifold.Look for broken or damaged wiring.
