Can I use HomeBrew Trailing Arm Tool to install IPD polyurethane bushings? 200 1993

Hello Bricksters:
I'm riding out Hurricane Alex in deep South Texas and planning to work on son's 1993 245 next month (barring another hurricane). I have made (and used successfully) the Home Brew Trailing Arm Bushing tool( http://www-ese.fnal.gov/People/wilcer/volvo_trailing_arm_bushing_tool.htm). I have installed OEM type bushings on a long departed 83 245. It worked great (as long as the threaded part was toward the differential...my introduction to cutting torch was then when the threaded part was toward the wheel...8.8 grade steel will resist any hacksaw for a long time..ask me how I know).
Now I have purchased the IPD poly kit for the TAB. However it consists of a hollow shell and poly inserts. I believe that the instructions show the inserts inside the hollow shell and then their TAB tool is used to push the whole thing in. I think the HomeBrew version will grind up the poly bushing's lip that sticks out of the hollow shell and so I plan to install just the shell at first, then the bushing inserts after the shell is on the car.
What do you all think?

    I used a home brew tool and pushed in the shell first, then the poly bushing. On one side I had lubed everything up enough (apparently), and although the bushing deformed while going in, it survived. The second side deformed quite a bit under the pressure. It cut into the mushroom head of the bushing pretty good. Everything sits fine though.

    The major problem with the homebrew tool an the poly bushing is the lack of a fine grade thread bolt and most importantly, the lack of a real custom fit pusher cup like you get with the IPD TAB tool. If ever doing it again with polys, I would rent the iPD tool.

      Hello again, Jason:
      Thanks for the previous help. Even after all our work, $$, new rebuilt parts, the ex-girlfriend still sold the 90 245 in Austin. Cheaply.
      Now, to your description of the results of the homebrew tool use. Did you install just the empty shell first, then the poly bushings? Or did you follow the IPD instructions of installing the bushings inside the shell, then pushing the whole thing into the ears of the TA?
      I plan to install the empty shells first (well lubed, of course) with the HomeBrew tool, then use a huge C-clamp to push in the lubricated poly inserts.
      Does this sound like a good plan?
      I think IPD doesn't rent the tool anymore and I have seen some for sale on eBay for $180 plus shipping.

    They must be using a new kind of poly bushing. When I got mine, it involed burning out the rubber with a torch , saw, whatever implements of destruction available and cleaning the old shell out and then pushing the new poly into the old shell

      yes, the IPD set has a new metal sleeve that the poly halves fit into. I thought that if I push in the empty shell first with the home brew tool, then insert the poly bushings after the shell is installed, it will save the poly lip from being torn up.
      I returned the poly bushings from FCPGroton that involved burning out the old rubber and leaving the OEM shell installed. Pyromaniac I am not.

    I used my my Homebrew tool to remove the old OEM rubber ones and replace with IPD's poly units without any problems.

    Good Luck with the storm and the bushings!

    Send plenty of rain up to D/FW, we need it!

    Sounds like a plan, I think either tool would mess up the poly bushing if you installed the sleeve and bushing at the same time.

    push the empty shell in, then squeeze in the bushings. it's easy enough to do with bare hands.
