starter inhibitor short and smoke 900 1993

I've learned that the starter inhibitor resides next to the shifter and allows continuity in park and neutral. It started to smoke yesterday, then the car wouldn't restart. When I took it apart I found the contacts charred and the plastic housing slightly warped and melted. One of the plastic mounting studs was broken which maybe allowed for play and poor contact.

Has anyone got a work around for this? I was thinking of temporarily bypassing the switch until I can get to a wreckers for a replacement. The wires going to it are pink, blue red, black and blue. I would appreciate any comments.

      Steve,

I saw the section on removing it in the FAQ, but I didn't realise you can just unplug it and leave it out. Is this the case? You don't have to jumper the connections either.
