Alternator mounting question 200

Everyone,

Thanks again for all you're help w/ my maiden voyage in resurrecting my first 240 project. My son loves it and it's running great.

One of the myriad of things I did to it was replace the alternator bushings which where shot. THAT I figured I could do w/out bothering you folks with questions. Guess I was wrong...sigh...

The alternator is currently twisted way out of line w/ the other pulleys, and it's obvious that the poly bushings I used from EEuroparts are totally shot already, after only a couple months. Cracked, and not even really still in the receiving housings at all.

Being a neophyte, it's completely conceivable that I pooched the install, although it seems like all of the MUCH more complicated stuff I did is holding beautifully. I was pretty sure I had them installed correctly, but it WAS a guess; the previous bushings and bolt/nut/washer hardware were totally shot and it was impossible to see how it was originally assembled.

Can any of you give me really clear descriptions of exactly how the bushings and hardware go, i.e., "The bushings are inserted from the outside of the mounting holes w/ the flanges on the OUTSIDE. The large bolt should be inserted from the front of the engine compartment through a large washer, then into the front bushing, through the alternator, out the back bushing, through another large washer, then attached with a nut."

I'm NOT saying that what I wrote is correct... PLEASE don't anyone follow that procedure.. it's just at template for what I'm looking for answer-wise. Can someone set me straight?

Thanks... sigh... sorry for the stupid question. I couldn't find any exploded diagrams in my shop manual or on the 'net.

Barry

Don't forget that there is a third bushing .... 200

Your description of your problem and concern for the two bushings on (what I call) the "hinge" of the alternator seemed to skirt the issue of the third bushing, so I wanted to just be sure that you had a "heads up" about it.

The bracket that has the long slit in which the adjusting bolt/nut slides, to adjust the tension on the belt, mounts to the engine just below the waterpump. That is where you will find the third bushing. It's exactly the same as the other two (that provide the "hinge" for the alternator), but it's easily overlooked if you don't know it's really there. You see, the lower end of that adjustment bracket doesn't really bolt to the engine -- rather, it bolts into the bushing, and the bushing in turn fits into a corresponding hole in the engine block. It's not something one would normally expect, and frankly I don't know why Volvo did that with these red block engines, but that's the way it is.

If your old bushings were shot, so is probably this one, and it's critical for keeping the alternator in position (and keeping the belt tension correct), so don't overlook it.

Good luck (and hope this helped).

    Alternator mounting question 200

Alternator. The Bushings should be mounted from inside the Bracket, outward. That is to say the Larger part of the Bushing should be touching the alternator as you slide the alternator between them.

Yes, Large Bolt slides in from the radiator side through, with the Nut back by the Oil filter.

Look at the Aluminum housing of the alternator. Is the Holes that the Large bolt passes through all Oblong?

      Alternator mounting question 200

Thanks for the reply, Tony. The bushings must have just been crap... I had them installed from the inside out, flanges inside and next to the alternator. No washers on either end of the bolt... just bolt head flush to the bushing, and nut flush on theother bushing?

      Thanks..

      Barry

      Alternator mounting question 200

What about the top alternator bushing where it mounts to the engine? Does the flange press against the engine, or should it be on the radiator side?

I did the bushings on my 242 yesterday and could remember which way that one went. I looked at my 245 for reference and found that that top bushing was completely shot (way worse than any bushing on the 242). Guess the 245 is next in line for bushings!

        Alternator mounting question 200

I don't have a third bushing on my '89. There is a Bracket that slides over a Bar that's attached to the engine. Like a Sleeve. That bracket is part of the adjuster.
I can't picture there being any bushing anywhere in that assembly.

          Interesting...

The 242 definitely has a bushing where that adjuster bracket meets the engine.

I couldn't really see the assembly too well in the 245 because I didn't take the shroud, fan etc. off.

I wonder if the '88s and '89s are different.

            Alternator mounting question 200 1989

As owner of an '89 wagon, yes, that 3rd bushing is there. My mechanic of several years and one who has been a Volvo mechanic for many years discovered it by "accident" while working on ligning up my alternator with new bushings. He was quite surprised and couldn't believe after so many years he didn't know it was there--he does now, as do I.
