240 stumbles/ skips - unpredictable 200 1992

1992 240 AT 235K miles has developed a slight skip or hesitation. Lasts less than 1-second; doesn't feel like the typical hesitation from a loose connection. It almost feels like it's starting to shift and then doesn't.

So far (500+ miles of it) it's unpredictable. It might be when the engine is not fully warmed up eg. the 1st 20 miles. It's not just under load; when wet (or dry); or cold out or hot out. At 1st I thought it was only with a full tank but now I'm not sure.

Yesterday it did it ~ 10 times during the 1st-3rd of a 30-mile trip. Coming home later it was fine. Today it's been doing it through most of several 10-12 mile trips.

Possibilities I can think of: 1) failing CPS; 2) failing MAS; 3) bad plug wire (or wires); 4) bad spark plug; 5) failing fuel filter; 6) loose/ corroded connection. But, again, the pause isn't long enough for what I've experienced w/ bad connections.

This car doesn't have the 25-A underhood fuse.

    240 stumbles/ skips - unpredictable 200 1992

I had a bad negative battery cable give me the exact same symptoms on a '88 5 speed. It was about the last thing I thought to troubleshoot.....I kept the ends of the cable clean and shinny, and the car ran perfect once it warmed up.

    Kind regards,
    Afton

This may be way off because I'm so new to Volvo's, but that is exactly what my '89 760 did before it got worse.
It was the fuel pump relay. A real easy fix.

Edit: I just realized I have brought this thread back from the dead. Sorry.

"This car doesn't have the 25-A underhood fuse."

Then check its replacement (Fuse #6) for clean, tight spring contacts.

Thanks Bruce. I checked it once and will check & clean it again today.

After more driving yesterday & today it seems completely unpredictable eg. I went about 20 miles with no miss; then it stumbled 2-3 times in a mile or so; then nothing for 10 miles; then another 2-3 times in ~ 3 miles. Then nothing for 30+ miles.

It almost feels like it's starting to downshift (or upshift) but then doesn't. Perhaps the OD relay is bad; or the OD unit is failing; or a wire is shorting. I've noticed that the "OD-off" arrow sometimes stays on for a minute or so of low speed driving. I think I've seen this in the past w/ a bad ground.

I notice also that it seems to miss when 1st started. I'm wondering if there are multiple problems: perhaps bad wires; and/ or a bad cold-start sensor; and a weak electrical connector somewhere.
