Periodic blowing of oil through flame trap--tailpipe smoke--oily filter 200

This query is in regards to my 1980 245. I had a reputable technician replace the engine with a B230 with my standard B21 head and manifolds, install a new ring set and bearing set. The engine has plenty of pep but a nasty habit of periodically (usually at higher Interstate speeds--65-70) of somehow blowing oil through the flame trap, fogging cars to the rear and depositing oil in the filter box. It will only happen for a short time, then clear exhaust. The technician cannot think of a reason for this activity but I am afraid I will be getting a citation if it happens at the wrong time. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this phenomena? Thanks in advance.

The 1980 has the flame trap on the cam cover (on the head), with a tube leading to the filter box.

The B230 has the trap on the oil separator on the block, with a tube leading to the air intake at the throttle.

So I assume you aren't using the B230 setup. In later B21s the flame trap was moved to the block position. Maybe this is why?

    Try using the B230 setup.

With the newer set up it's possible that under acceleration and higher rpm that the bellows tube feeding air from cleaner to the throttle body can collapse due large draw of air. When it collapses and partially blocks air flow a large vacume develops and sucks oil up through the flame trap. When you ease up on throttle the tube pops back out and all is normal. Had this happen on my 88 740, smoked like hell. One day it did not pop out and I saw it when I opened the hood. The tube was oil soaked and very soft. Not too familiar with the old type but maybe similar can occur.

        Old post--problem not yet resolved.

David, how did you resolve this problem with the bellows?

        Anyone have any other ideas?

        Thanks in advance.

          Periodic blowing of oil through flame trap--tailpipe smoke--oily filter--old OLD post--SUCCESS 200 1980

Listers--this is a SUCCESS posting. The problem seems to have been caused by my failure to replace the valve stem seals in the cylinder head when we rebuilt my engine. We speculate the increased engine vacuum would cause the drawing of excessive oil that would accummulate in the camshaft housing under the valve cover and would then be sucked through the flame trap, some of it continuing into the filter box and a large amount being drawn directly into the intake manifold through the hose that's attached to the flame trap hose. The excess oil being drawn into the manifold would periodically cause a huge billow of smoke out the tailpipe that would obliterate anyone following too close. Hmmm, not a bad tactic after thinking about it.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

          Bob R

Very simple, I replaced the the bellows hose.

It shouldn't be possible to suck oil up through the flame trap. That suggests the black box oil separator is partly blocked, so there is no chamber left for oil to separate out in and run back harmlessly into the pan.
