1987 240 a/c revival questions 200

Hi all,

I am trying to see if I can revive the a/c on a 1987 240. I have another 240 that I can check against and it is clear that the ac clutch is not engaging as on the one that is working. When I turn, or rather twist, the ac knob on the one that works you can see the innards of the compressor turning. It has been a few years since the ac has worked on this 240. Is there a way to test and see if the compressor is not turning because power is not getting to the compressor? When I turn the switch knob I do not feel a positive click like I feel on the one that is working.

Also, where are the high and low pressure ports for the ac located on this car?

Many thanks,
Jim Lee

Couldnt add this before low/high ports behind compressor low side is the fatter hose and this side is for charging the system.

Make sure engine is off . Grab clutch assembly in front this should spin freely both ways if not compressor clutch is bad. This happened to my 88 240 put known good one from junkyard.

Your system may be low on pressure. Fastest way to see if the AC Clutch will kick in is to bypass the low pressure switch. That is over at the front of the passengers side on the dyer. There are two green wires on a connector and to bypass it just take a couple of inches of wire and a couple of spade lugs and make a little jumper. After you add the jumper start the car, crank the knob CCW and after a few sec the clutch should click and the compressor start growling.

If that does not cause the clutch to engage the voltage from inside the car may have an issue.

You can also find the connector on the ac clutch and seperate it. Take a wire a couple of feet long and make a connection up inside the side of the plug that goes to the AC clutch. Touch the other end of the wire to plus side of the battery and you should hear a click and see the clutch move towards the firewall. Should move back when you remove the wire.

Do not run the low pressure switch bypassed, bad juju.

Regards,

Paul
