Question about rear camshaft oil seal plug. 200

I am having a small oil leak issue with my 87 240. I can't tell if the leak is from the valve cover gasket or the round plug at the back of the head. How likely is it for the plug to leak just a little bit? The flame trap is clear and I have the bracket that holds the plug in place.
My question is, how difficult is it to remove and replace that plug with the engine in place, and how is it done? Should the plug be glued in place with some gasket cement? Thanks in advance for the replies!

Question about rear camshaft oil seal plug. 200

When I did mine, it was leaking a bit, not a blow out. I took the valve cover off and rear Cam bearing holder. Put some tacky gasket sealer on the Puck and placed it in the Head, then put the Bearing Cap over it. New Valve cover gasket and all is dry. BB'rs have different opinions on the gasket sealer... It just makes me feel more secure. I then made my own IPD ear Cam Plug cover.

Question about rear camshaft oil seal plug. 200

I'd clean it up the best you can back there, drive it a bit, and then see if you can ID the leak.

Better yet, the gasket and plug are dirt cheap, might as well replace them both. The rear plug is a bear to get out with it all together, but real easy if you pull the valve cover and then the rear most bearing cap for the camshaft. Put it all back together with a fresh valve cover, then simply push the new cam plug into the back of the engine.

Thanks for the replies. I changed out the plug today, and without the little tip you gave me about removing the cam bearing cap I would've been out there still struggling... your tip made the job get done in about an hour. Sometimes it's the little things that make this site so great!
