'83 245: can I change from solid to vented rotors? 200

Hi all,

Trying to do a major brake job on my son's '83 245. It has solid rotors. The local parts house has vented rotors, and the appropriate calipers, on the shelf. The calipers for the solid rotors are a 4-5 day order time.

Is this a direct swap?

Monty

Yes, but the calipers need new, longer, pad retaining pins.

...be sure you check your "new" calipers for this known Rebuild Error before you leave the store.

Thanks to all. I'll be sure to check.

My biggest problem right now is breaking the brake lines loose. I've been soaking it with PB Blaster, but so far..... no luck. Heat?

a Flare nut wrench is much more appropriate then just an Opne end wrench.

If you need to go to flame... Heed LUCID's warning to open the Bleeders. if not you will absolutely blow out a Soft Brakeline. I've done it

The faith-based snake oil of your choice can't hurt. The proper flare or line wrench (11mm or 7/16") is the tool of choice.

Avoid muscle and heavy torque. Better to apply moderate hand-torque to the wrench while tapping it in the "loosen" direction with a light hammer, down near the nut. The hammer taps mimic the action of an impact wrench, so the theory goes.

Only if that fails would I go to heat (with an open bleeder valve). And only with a really small flame like my Oxy-MAPP torch can provide. IMO, a regular MAPP or Propane torch flame is too much.

I think you can as long as the calipers and rotors are for vented. You will want non ABS calipers.
