444 Grille Coating 444-544 1958

Hello Folks

My 444's grille is in need of a refinish. If anyone out there has had good luck with a particular paint in terms of color and finish quality could you please share your wisdom?

Thanks!

Jim

I have a '57 grill (the middle style grill):

The insert is painted black (at least where it's not rusty). There is no sign of any other color before it. Looks original. It supposely came off a 445.

All the ones I've seen from Volvo handbooks show the insert being gray.

BTW-I do have a later grill that was almost new (insert and surround - still had a volvo parts sticker on it)and the insert paint is 90% there:

Thanks and that later grill does look nice. Are you entertaining offers?

        Jim-

Sent you an email, but it was bounced back.

If you're interested in the grill, I would need to get $350 for the surround and the insert.

This is what I did on mine...
got out all the dents/bends I could, then media blasted. Next I painted both sides silver (Sherwin Williams rattle can) then put on a 'Krylon' clear coat. It seems to be lasting pretty well (over one year and still looks OK).
Not sure if this is how they came from the factory, I suspect that they were painted a non-metalic gray.

    Cheers!
    OK

That looks nice in silver. I have some of that Eastwood detail gray which is probably pretty close to the original. Unless I procure a better specimen than mine I might just do that with a clear satin lacquer topcoat. The satin lacquer lasts reasonably well.

      Thanks!
