I think my starter has bit the dust... 120-130

Very strange behavior. I turn the key to on, and the gas gauge pops up. I press the starter button, I get a click like the starter is trying to start, then nothing, and then the gas gauge drops like there is no juice in the battery. It could be that the battery is that low, but I tried this with a jumper battery, and I get the same results.

Turn the key off and then back on, and it still shows nothing on the gas gauge.

I let it sit for 10-15 mins and same behavior. I plan to try and bump start it this weekend.

Any ideas??

    KK;

    If you get a click from the solenoid when hitting the Start Button but no action from Starter Motor itself, High Current Contact of solenoid is suspect. See also: http://www.sw-em.com/starter.htm

    Good Hunting!

    Sounds like a classic bad/oxidized connection to me. Clean and check at the battery and starter, don't forget the grounds!

    Cheers!
    OK

      That did the trick. I took off both battery leads, cleaned them. Followed the + down to the starter, cleaned the posts on the solenoid and the cables and viola! She started right up.

      Water pump is starting to make noise now though =(

      Life with a classic.

      I think you may be correct. I was thinking the ground was bad. I will get out the wire brush tomorrow night and see how we do.

        Now you're talkin! A 122 that old is a batch of oxidized and dirty connections just waiting to bushwhack you. Including that ground. Clean, re-crimp, and pickle everything in sight.
