AC Conversion 1992 245 200 1992

There’s been a lot of buzz about the increased cooling properties (over the earlier models) of the ’91-’92 240’s with factory equipped R12. Hearing this I am eager to get my Brick’s system working once again. I drive a 1992 245 that has an R12 A/C system on its last legs. The compressor is leaking, and the seals have all but failed and leaks abound. That said the other components of the system are intact and functioning as they should.

My questions are as follows:

1) Which conversion kit do I purchase, where do I buy it, and which components does this kit contain to convert to R134a?
2) Is there a book or manual (such as the Bentley) that will explain in great detail how this specific AC system works?
3) Is there a book on A/C conversions or function, in general, worth reading?

I plan to take my time and do this repair as much as I can out of my own driveway, following instructions to the “T”. I want to do the job right and once, so I am not averse to spending money to buy the best parts for the job.

    What's the difference between the $32.99 ScanTech conversion kit and the big Volvo kit - other than the receiver/dryer stuff? I want to effect a conversion for the lowest cost, but not skimp on doing the job right. I was thinking of the following process:

    1) having the R12 evacuated professionally
    2) installing new rec/dryer
    3) installing $32.99 scantech kit
    4) installing new compressor
    5) having system recharged with R134.

    Weather, I saw an earlier post where you described the following procedure:

    "here's my conclusion from a while ago:
    get the scan tech conversion kit, which includes all seals o-rings and such, fcp part number 51.002.1, 25 bucks
    get the AC dryer, 32 bucks
    go to a junkyard and find a '93 240 or a retrofitted 240 and get the pipe that goes between the firewall and the dryer (the one that has the valve for R134a).

    that's basically the $200 kit FCP sells. most of the money goes into that pipe."

    Can you describe or post an image of the "pipe that goes between the firewall and the dryer?"

    I am at the Pick A Part almost every Saturday morning. I could get one of these (or more) for about $10. Or better yet, doesn't the new FCP Groton kit come with the R-12 to R-134a fitting adapters so there would be no need for the firewall/dryer pipe?

      it's the pipe with the fill port, coming out of the left side of the dryer (as viewed in the picture orientation) on the upper left corner of the picture.

      my guess back then was not correct--the 93 dryer has different threads than '91-92 on the 3 large fittings (pipe to firewall, hose to compressor, and pressure switch). so you can't just use the '93 pipe on an earlier car unless you ALSO use the '93 version dryer, '93 pressure switch, and '93 dryer-compressor hose (assuming the hose is compatible with your compressor)

      what i did was i transplanted the '91-92 nut to a '93 pipe through cutting and welding, and used a '91 dryer, with my old pressure switch and hose.

      the scantech kit has only the o-rings, orifice tube and a few fittings for the ports on the back of the compressor. if you use the scantech kit only, you'll have to get under the car every time you charge the system.

      I've just gone through the same process with my '81 245. Bottom line, it was cheaper and quicker to have the a/c shop check the system, repair any leaks and refill it with R12. My cost was $232. Every one I talked to said that to do it right, one must replace all the R12 components with R134 components, including compressor, condenser, dryer, evaporator, and the fans that Volvo used in the '93 240 model. That would cost well over $1000. It might not be politically correct to use the R12 but it's out there and it works.
