91 240 not charging 200

My 240 isn't charging. Using my digital volt meter, I have 12.38v at idle, I rev it up and voltage drops to 12.32v. Any ideas? Back story is that I've had this sedan for a few months, the PO put a rebuilt alt on it. It wasn't charging when I got it, found out that the wiring on the alt had came loose I reconnected it and all seemed well till a few weeks ago.

Without starting, does your alt light come on? If not, change the bulb. The bulb is part of the circuit and without continuity, you will not get a charge.

First turn your key to Pos II and see if all the idiot lights come on. If they don't check the frame of the alternator to the engine block for resistance. Should be Zero Ohms, and if not the ground wire from the Alt Frame to the engine block is open. Without that ground you will not get the idiot lights and your system will not charge.

If you still don't have idiot lights and you do have a ground to the block there may be a problem with the little red wire.

Then make sure you have a good ground to the engine block and to the battery.

After that check the brushes and see if they are worn to nubs.

    Good Luck,

    Paul

There should be 14 to 15 volts from the alternator at the battery. So, connections, regulator, or alternator aren't right.
