1988 245 Died Last Night - AMM? 200

Why is it that when one of your kids has the family 245 out, it's never a good thing when the phone rings just before midnight? Some of you may remember my Christmas Eve odyssey when Betsy broke down in NYC and yours truly drove 4 hours from PA to rescue my daughter and our semi-trusty 245. Saved the day in 15 minutes after finding a corroded 25 amp fuse under the hood. Last night was my son's turn. Lucky for me he was coming home from work and only 2 miles away.
He thought he was out of gas so I put 5 gallons in. Still would not run unless I rapidly pumped the gas pedal at about 50 cycles per second :o)! But even then it would barely run. Stop pumping the throttle and it died. Remembering what I had read on Brickboard, I disconnected the plug from the air mass meter. Betsy finally started up normally and ran at idle. I was then able to limp home. Today she started up while the AMM was still disconnected but died when I plugged the connector in. I've tested the AMM per the Bentley and Brickboard FAQ 700/900 series. For the LH-2.2 I should have 3.5 o 4.0 ohms between terminals 2 and 3. I am getting 2.9 ohms. Idle mixture potentiometer range is 0-1000 ohms. I have .297 ohms which is low but within range. Time for a new AMM? Just wanted to run this by you guys to try to avoid the shotgun approach in parts replacement.

Also, noticed the connector to the throttle switch was oily. Removed the connector from the switch and found motor oil inside the connector. Any ideas as to the cause of this?

Thanks!

Problem resolved!
A special attaboy goes out to pageda AKA Dan for making available a replacement AMM he had floating around the garage which I installed today. Betsy is once again back on the road. As I was about to take her around the block, my neighbor pulls up and asks why I put up with all the headaches of an old car. To that I just said to myself, "If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand."

Get in touch with FCP Groton, and they will sell you a reman unit for about 150 bucks. It comes with a warranty, and you can ship your old one to them in the box that the new one came in. The 007 AMM from them is as good as you will find.

Thanks, Stickbuilder.
FCP Groton seemed to have the best price.
They beat Autozone and Advance pricing, too.

Sounds like you did the diagnostics already. The Pumping Pedal routine is what is needed to keep a car with a bad AMM running. With a Manual Trani at least you can push in the clutch to keep the revs high to get it home.
Yeah ... The kids are out late and the phone rings.. Instant knot in stomach.

Your daughter was in the City or? when it was the Fuse?

Is the Preheater hose from the Exhaust Manifold and T'Stat in the Airbox still intact?

Tony,

That was the Saw Mill River Parkway, Yonkers, NY but to me out here in PA its all NYC. The Brickboard guys gave me a lot of good tips before I left. Helped me immensely.

The pre-heater hose from the manifold has been off for several years. Once read that it's best to leave off so I didn't install the new one.
besides, never could locate the t'stat in the airbox. There are couple bolt holes on the top back corner of the airbox where something was once mounted.
Not sure about that.
Thanks.

Mark

OK, that's about 1.5 hours from me.
In hind sight I was wondering if I could have saved you the long Hike.
A long drive for a damned fuse but at least it was an easy /cheap fix and all was good.
It isn't officially I don't think. But to me, Yonkers is the City too. I can't imaging what the turn-on is about the City. Noise, Traffic and garbage everywhere...yuck

I know you mentioned the Ohms readings were bad but...How do the Pins look on both the Connector and in the AMM? they can get a tiny bit of oxidation and cause havoc.
Art Benstein had this with one of his cars. a slightly 'green' pin got him crazy.

Ah, That is an '87 Yamaha Venture Royale. Yamahas version of the Honda GoldWing.

Story behind that too. Teh bike spent most of it's life in the Hamptons under a Beach house that was on Stilts. The rich clown bought it new, drove it for two years (4800 miles worth). He decided he didn't like Bikes, He sparyed it with oil, rapped it in Sheets and there it sat for 9 years. 2 weeks before he moved he stumbled across it under his house and needed to sell it. It looked like crap and some parts were taken off it as he tried and failed at getting it running for the sale. He had no takers until I showed up and offered him an embarrassing low price for it. Well, who knew how many Seals were dried out, And after a few minutes I could get the thing to almost run at full choke. three days before he left he called me and took my offer. $2500
I took the bike apart, cleaned it up including Carbs, and well, It has been several years and the bike now has 63K miles on it now.

Tony,
Great story of a great find! I ride a '95 Honda Pacific Coast which has an unusual integrated trunk. Also a '81 Suzuki GS550T with a Vetter Nightstalker fairing(a blast from the past). Waiting to be restored is a '79 Yamaha SX650 Special (Yamaha's answer to the Triumph Bonneville). No, I'm not going to chop or bob it like a lot of the gearheads out there are doing these days. At least I don't think I am. I had it running years ago and and it didn't seem to track real straight. Anyway, something is not quite right with it so maybe it is a good candidate for a bobber!
Thanks for your input.
Mark

Oh sure, A coworker/ friend bought an '83 650 Special... same thing only different. The Ocean Pacific.. I've seen them. They look almost like the Honda ST1100 and ST1300 and the Kawasaki Concours. A tourer with a racy look.
This friend, Gene, was an E-bay hound. He bought his first bike to learn on for $300. It was only after I helped him put it in his truck that I heard that I had to get it running. Heck, two lunchbreaks at his house and it ran. After he he participated in the Carb off operation and realized how simple these 450-650 twin are, he started buying up every old, "Not run in years" bikes he could find for cheap. Any bike that size is a good Starter bike so he was buying them in the Fall for under $300, getting them running and making a killing in the Spring. Every will buy a Starter Bike for $1000. He turned around enough Bikes to buy the bike he wanted.
Bobbers... not a big fan of stripping down a nice looking bike to make it look like it belongs out for the garbage.

I believe the Pivot Arm bushings at the rear suspension is known for wearing out, No Grease fittings on those. That might be your tracking issue. Unless the Triple Tree is bent

Yeah, I saw Art's post with picture of the wire connectors.
Mine look good as is the rubber boot but I'll take a closer look with a flashlight. Try to rule out the simple stuff.
Like your CJ-5 rebuild. Sweet! But i have to ask... what is that bike parked behind the Jeep in the garage???

I'd look for the AMM out of another 240 or 740 that matches the number on yours. Make sure you check the thermostat in the air box. Make sure its not stuck allowing only hot air into the car from the silver tube. I jam a sort of big bolt but short with a nut on it for replacing the thermostat. Never have to worry about AMM getting burned up.

For the oil I'd do a throttle body cleaning with new gasket. (Use throttle body cleaner) Clean the flame trap and get a better look into that area below the intake while you have the throttle body out.
