What are the brake pad back plates for?

Hi! I just replaced all 4 wheel brake pads. The car is now making terrible squeaking sounds. I noticed the back plates are in pretty bad shape but I did not replace them. Is this the cause? The disc rotors were not perfect flat but I thought they were not bad.

My question is what are the back plates for? VOLVO seems the only car that I know requiring back plates.

    The back plates are to eliminate the annoying brake squeal. Order a complete set, grease them up with high-temp caliper grease, reinstall and now your family won't be able to hear you coming from 1/2 mile away...ask me how I know!
