92 240 Air cond (AC) questions - high pressure valve? proper pressure??? 200 1992

Hey all - It's gotten in the Mid 90's here in TN with high humidity - I've got to get the air conditioner working on my daughters 1992 240.

The clutch was cycling on and off every second or so - so I added more R134 and this did stop the cycling. It seems to be cooling some (but not nearly enough).

I wanted to hook some gauges up to both the low pressure side and the high pressure side - so I don't blow something up. I've only found the low pressure side valve on the condensor. - - Since I've never seen seen a car without a high pressure side valve - anyone have an idea where it is???

Also, while checking the pressure on the low side(at the condensor), it shows about 80 at idle, but drops to the 40s when revving the engine up a a bit. Anyone know what the correct pressure should be?

Thanks for all your help
Charles

92 240 Air cond (AC) questions - high pressure valve? proper pressure??? 200 1992

There should be a high and low pressure port on on the hind end of the compressor that are both a real pain in the buttocks to hook up to. Numerous folks have installed right angle fittings to make the job a little easier, Napa sells them but not for cheap.

AC - Right Angle Adapters from NAPA - HELP!!! 200 1992

Bought the Right Angle adapters from Napa. They were actually pretty reasonable in price (about $7.00 each). But the guy at the store told me that I needed to remove my valve stems for these adapters.

This seemed strange to me, but like a good little minion, I did as I was told. (Obviously I lost all my freon/R134 and oil). Getting the adapters on is a tremendous pain in the but as they are simply are too high up from the bottom for a normal wrench - and too far down from the top.

After about 2 hours of struggling - I figure sucess - and start to add R134 back to my car. I get it back to the point where the compressor is starting to cycle every few seconds, and realize I need to add another can. When I take the connector off to get another can (because my lines are so short I can't do it while attached) - - - all the freon/134 that I just added blows out!!!!!

Are these defective, or is the Napa parts guy wrong. (If he's wrong, I'm going to be really hacked as these things are difficult to get to, and I lost one of the valve stems due to the high pressure blowing it off somewhere in my gravel driveway!!!!!)

HELP !!!!!
Thanks Charles

AC - Right Angle Adapters from NAPA - HELP!!! 200 1992

Charles:
In order to do the job of installing the right angle connectors, I have always had to remove the compressor and bring it to the work bench. It means having the correct big wrenches or adjustables and the correct O-rings for the hoses to the compressor.
The tech is correct. You remove the valves on the R-12 outlets and screw on the R 134 right-angle one. Actually you should only need the high pressure, since the low pressure can be read from the port where you add the Freon.
Good luck,
el raidman
