Amen - good stuff from George 200

Thought I got to read all the good stuff here on RWD, but now that Klaus and George have partially crossed over...

Amen - good stuff from George 200

Hi Art,

In George's first post, under Findings he says: "It is suspected that a copper-based antiseize agent was used on the pin of the failed ScanTech ball joint upon installation (but not on the threads)"

I feel like a heretic here, citing a Haynes manual as a reference, but my first Volvo 240 Ball Joint job was back around 1990, when my guidebook was an older (and IMO much better) Haynes 240 manual for 1974 thru 1990.

In the balljoint replacement procedure, following the obligatory Refitting is a reversal of removal, it says, "Do not grease the ball joint stud or it may seat to deeply and damage the rubber boot." [my emphasis]

Somehow that 1990 admonition stuck with me all these years, and I still fit the balljoint and tie rod end taper studs "dry", and feeling a tad smug at being "in the know" about such things. So far it hasn't caused me grief.

Just now I see that the later Haynes (1976 thru 1993) is not as direct, but does hint at the grease issue by saying, "Clear all grease from the housing and new balljoint, then attach..."

I think I even half-remember reading a similar caution in a balljoint manufacturer's packaging years ago too, but that may just be on-time onset senility.

What are your thoughts on this gripping issue? (edit)

Gripping issue indeed 200

Yes, Bruce, gripping issue.

Quite honestly, I did not even try to apply my 240 experience to what I perceive as an exotic 21st-century automobile. If the taper-fit ball joint works the same as its attachment to the strut on a 240, then what would be the purpose of any lube at all? From my perspective, lube there (on the taper) is counterproductive, and I carefully remove any that has found its way to it.

Grip
I agree, I have always cleaned with solvents the mating surfaces for ball joint and tie rod ends to clean off grease. It makes installing them much easier.
