Dying while driving 200 1993

wouldn't you know it...proud Dad sends son off to big city (Dallas) with what Dad thinks is perfectly ready 93 245. Son commutes 45 miles each way to work on highway for 2 days...no problema!
Then the "Green Hornet" starts to die out at highway speeds, idiot lights come on. I had the alternator rebuilt last year with a new voltage regulator installed. Battery is 3 years old, however. Should son take out battery after work and have it checked at FranticBoys? Could it also be a defective Voltage Regulator?
Man, long distance repairs by phone are a mother dog!!!
Thanks for any suggestions, Bricksters.
BTW, Mom is suggesting getting rid of the 245 and buying a ...(shudder)...Honda.

Dying while driving 200 1993

News from stranded son....60 amp fuse next to battery was blown..his friend 'hot wired' the fuse by jumping with a wire. I told him to look for the extra fuses I placed in the back because I am worried that jumping the fuse will mask the short that blew it in the first place and start a fire. BUT perhaps I jostled the fuse box when I installed a 48 series battery instead of the 47 that is required. The 48 fit but I had to man-handle the fuse box to cram the bigger battery in. I have since installed the correct 47 series, but again having to move the fuse box to take out the 48 battery.
Any suggestions as to what blows the 60 amp fuse?

Fuel system (pump) relay, he can place a jumper on the left side of fuses 4 and 6 to temporarily bypass the relay. Just remove the jumper when you shut it off so the pumps stop running.
I'd bet your son would like a Honda S2000, I know I would.

Battery is completely dead...no cranking at all as of noon today.
Honda S2000 would be an exciting car to drive, but he can't carry his photo tripods, etc as well as can be done in the back of a 245.

That will do it also, make sure it is charging.

The alternator was rebuilt by a reputable shop and they installed a Bosch (hecho en Mexico) voltage regulator. This was last month. You would think that it would be OK, but then one never knows for sure until the meter is put onto the battery terminals to check for voltage.
Thanks for the input.

Does it re-start after a while? If so, I'd suspect the power stage...

Good luck!

Hello Herb:
Would you recommend just replacing it with one from the Boneyard? That's the only one I have.

Good deduction...it is the OEM power stage from 1993. I hope I placed a spare in the rear compartment. I have one in each of my wife's and mine (740's).
Thanks again,

Another simple thing to check/do is look for corrosion i the fuse box. Takes but a few minutes to pull all the fuses, wire brush the contacts in the fuse box, and replace with new fuses. My beloved 240 had weird intermittent no-starts, hard starts and, yes, dying while running even at highway speeds. The simple cleaning of the fuse box solved the problem. Seems that the circuit that tells the fuel pump to run was not getting sufficient juice, so the pump would cut out.

Muchas gracias!!! I will send your suggestion to son so he can twirl all the fuses, then later wire brush the holder and add di-electric grease to minimize corrosion. We did this about a year ago, but it seems he needs to do it again.
