fuel sender seal problems 120-130

Hey,

A year ago I purchased one of those newly pressed gas tanks from
IPD because I was sick of the intense gas smell in my 122 and certain mine was old and leaking. When it came down to fastening the fuel tank sender plus rubber seal into the new tank my friend Danny who posts on here regularly found it darn near impossible to tighten the screws down completely. His conjecture was that when they painted the coating on the tank they did not cover the screw holes and the paint seeped in. Has anyone else struggled with this? Should I put a dremel tool inside the holes and grind out the paint? A new thicker rubber seal would definitely help. I am still driving in a haze of gas fumes with a brand new tank.

Any help would be appreciated

thanx

J.

I wouldn't dremel the holes out.

Did you try to screw the screws in without the sending unit inplace to clean out the holes? If you can't clean out the threads by just using the screws (I assume the screw threads are correct and in good shape), I would use a tap (there are things called a clean out taps that aren't designed to cut new threads, but are hard to find) to clean out the holes.

Paul

Hello,

It is possible that the threads are different?

The original tank uses US threads, but the new tank may not.

Either way you should use the proper thread chaser to remove any paint or coating from the threads.

Do not use any power tools or anything that can produce sparks around gasoline!!
