a/c 245 wagon 200 1989

I am just looking for any advice if you have any. First, i have a '89 245 wagon, 205k, gas, a/t, non-turbo. a/c compressor is shot, but no leaks ever, worked excellent until the compressor gave out. . A new one on the way (NEW-NOT a "reman" or "refurb") with a new drier and expansion valve. Will convert to r134a. my mechanic will do the remove and replace. Then on to have it all evacuated and charged. I feel it's under control but just asking any sugegstions. BTW all hoses look great. The mounting bushings will also be replaced. Wagon is in excellent shape, well maintained. Thank you ahead of time for your comments.

The volvo kit has more than tripled in price, but works very well because of the high-efficiency evaporator.

If you dont use the Volvo kit,but do use the 134a refrigerant, use an expansion valve and drier for 134a.They are calibrated differently.

I converted my 1992 using the Volvo kit several years ago. Just last night I installed a new air conditioning belt and adjusted the tension on it. While taking it on a test drive I was amazed at how great the 134a works. I had the defroster vent button pushed and the air conditioning was so cold that it was causing condensation to form on the windshield. Good luck with your converstion.

Are you upgrading the evaporator as well? The old one is generally considered insufficient for use with R134a. The Volvo conversion kits included a new higher-capacity one.

You might consider adding a pusher fan in front of the condenser--that was standard on the later 240's. I'd certainly go "used" on that, so you can snag the wiring and relay as well as the fan and hardware all at once.

My mechanic uses 'Freeze 12'. He used it on my 81 245 and it works fine. Any long term problems with Freeze 12?

        F12 has an upside and a downside......... 200 1989

There are a couple of down sides to F12. One is that your pro can't use a normal recovery system if the unit has to be opened up for a repair. Humbo your pro either has a dedicated system for F12 or uses an alternative method to remove the F12. Don't ask, don't tell is most likely the answer there.

The other issue on the downside is that you also have be licensed to purchase F12, not just anyone is supposed to be able to walk up and buy it as needed. You have to know someone who is licensed or have one yourself if you need to add coolant later. You also need access to the old R12 equipment with the old fittings. Not every Do it your self owner is going to be able to pull all that together. You can still find a lot of old R12 stuff on Craigs List and Ebay.

Yes this is also a compressed gas that is flammable, that is why you don't want any uncontrolled releases near an ignition source. The danger is also very minimal, you might not want to hold a lit cigarette in your hand over a fitting if the gas is having an uncontrolled release. However other side of the flammable gas argument for F12 is there is a lot of this stuff out there in older cars. Have you seen any burned out hulks with TV reporters in front of them talking about the dangers of alternative refrigerant gases?

Works quite well and can be mixed in with R12 with no real ill affects, works a lot better that a regular R12 to R134 Conversion.

I ran the R12/F12 combo until the compressor locked up with great success. The loss of my source for replacement F12 is why Inga today runs PAG 40 and R134 with a pusher fan humming away in the front.

        Regards,

        Paul
