Twisted seats 200 1990

The seat backs on my 1990 244 are twisted, is there a fix for this? I had an 87 245 that had the same problem, I assume this is pretty common?

Broken welds and some loose connecitons 200 1990

As others have mentioned, the seat frame welds can fail with time which may contribute to angle problems. Other things I've encountered include:

- Loose bolts at the seat-frame-base to seat-back connecting point
- Seat-back gears getting out of alignment

I think the gears getting out of alignment is common to most all 240s that I've seen. I had a quick post last month about correcting it here - http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=1420590&show_all=1

Good luck,
Zach

The nature of getting into these cars is to put a leg in, drop your butt on the seat then put a lot of body weight on the Inner section of the seat. ( Drivers side, you drive your right shoulder into the backrest). What happenes is one of two things. The foam tears and rips through the frame or the frame cracks. Can you see the seat frame bulging on the seat cover fabric? If not then the frame is probably bad.

See pic "B" this would indicate bad foam http://cleanflametrap.com/tony/seat_bottom.htm

My '90 sedan had tweeked seats as well, but I found no cracks. I bent back the passenger seat and got a junkyard seat for the driver side. Among all three seats I got two complete good sets of foam.

The welds to the frame break. Remove the seats the seat covers and the foam and have the frame rewelded. I bought a Hobart flux core wire feed welder just for the job and it worked great no welding gas needed either.

Same thing with my 88/200. Looks like somebody put the seat back and jumped on it until it busted.

Took it apart and the welds were busted. Went to junk yard got two more just in case. Now the wire webbing in the new old seat is, you guessed it, busted. Think I'll try using twelve gauge copper wire in concert with a piece of 5mm plywood.

You can make a good duplicate with piano wire from a hardware store. Comes in 3ft lengths and many diameters. I used tubing to space the wires and keep them from cutting into the foam. It is also a great opportunity to rebuild the seat according to the procedures here on the board.

IPD just started selling the wire frames for the seat bottoms and they are pretty reasonably priced. They should be up on their website by now.
