Engine starts running hot on long drives in warm weather 200 1990

There is enough coolant and it has been replaced every two years. What do I look for? Is it possible to back flush the radiator? If so how?

Thanks,

Mark

Take a careful look at the fins on the radiator. If they are brittle, rusted or falling apart, you'll need to replace the radiator. I had the same problem you mentioned for years before I figured it out. There was only a small portion of the radiator deteriorated, but it was enough to make it a little to warm on those hot days and up big hills. I replaced the radiator and the guage has yet to move past half way. Replacement is a pretty straight forward job and I'm sure it's archived well on this site. Good luck.
Best,
Craig

Hi, I dont remember the brand, I dont think it is very important. Online, Autohaus Arizona or FCP groton will get you the right part for a fair price if you can wait a couple of days for it to come in. Otherwise most autoparts stores will have it in stock. Good luck, hope that helps.
Best,
Craig

First thing I would do is to get your hose and spray the radiator, front and back to clean out mud/road grime from the cooling fins. It helps the AC condenser also, if you have AC.

Is the engine fan coming on when you engage the AC? It is supposed to.

Do you know that the engine is actually running hot, or is the temperature gauge deceiving you thanks to the temperature compensation board? If the T-comp board is still in your instrument cluster... from the factory, that is most likely the problem. Remove and bypass it. If that is already done, the radiator might be plugged up and needs tanked or replaced.

Thanks I may try that. A couple of years ago I pulled the board out and cleaned the contacts not problems since, until this summer.

I'll keep that in mind.
