Repairing a 122 headliner? 120-130

My 122's headliner finally popped another metal "rib" thing and is sagging worse than it did when just one had ripped off it's rib. Looks like I'm going to either have to take it out and replace it, or possibly repair it.

Has anybody had any luck repairing their headliner once it tears of those metal wire rib things? I'll admit I have zero experience with working with taking out and installing headliners, so is this a project that might be too hard to learn or teach myself? Is repairing those ripped ribs even possible?

Oh.. and has anybody found a good source and price for replacement headliners?

Thanks for the input.

I would say "no" to repairing. Problem is that the material is so old, that it will find new places to tear.

Ebay sells some for around $140:

Swedish Treasures sells them for around $170:

Remember that each bow needs two rubber ends on them. They usually fall off when you pull the headliner.

OK. Thanks for the replacement sources.

What's the technique for the least damage in taking the old one out? I suppose I should just take it out to see what I'm looking at in terms of possible repair. Sounds like I should just replace though...

I just took one out. Of course you can just rip it out, but that won't show you how to put it back in.

The one I did was on a parts car with all the seats out, and all the glass out.

Once you start taking it out, it's pretty obvious how it was put in. It might be easier to have an auto Upholstery shop install a new one.

On the one I just took out, I started way in the back at the bottom of rear windshield. First you need to pull the headliner out of teeth at the very bottom in the back (be careful, it's pretty easy to tear the headliner). You will see that the headliner is clamped down by a bracket with teeth. You will need to unscrew each bracket, one section at a time and pull the headliner out of the teeth as you go. Once you get headliner out to the point where you are close to one of the bows, you can push the bow over to access the screws near the bow. You will get half way through the car (because the bracket will end), then you will have to start at the front of the car (you will have to remove the inside windshield surrounds).

It took about 30-45 minutes to take out (that was just the headliner, everything in the way was already taken out). I would say it's a day or two to install one.

Paul

Hey,

Thanks for the description of how to proceed. I will see if I can manage to take it out, and based on how difficult that is and what I learn in the process... I'll decide whether to try it myself.
