IPD garage sale 140-160

Spent the later part of the morning wandering around the 2010 IPD garage Sale. Great weather and Great cars. Hang on to your 140's these are becoming a rare breed amongst the Volvo crowd. In the swap meet area I saw a far cry for 140 parts than last year. And saw only a few 140's that were worth mentioning. Even in the IPD car show I saw none that were in there car show contestant thing. I had a good time. picked up some parts from the swap meet ( B20 Valve cover with cap, some stock 740 speakers to replace the blown pioneers in my doors, and some rear mudflaps that I have needed for some time. From IPD (Idiots Pay Double) I picked up some free stickers and a sew on patch, also paid some cash for a silver key chain with the Volvo emblem to hang from my mirror and a funky little bag of nuts and bolts to help my valve cover from leaking. In true honesty after my wander only lest than 10% of the cars really had me slobbering. as most were pushing the later 240 and up blingy thing. For vintage Volvo metal I got to say its getting a bit rare. I walked away and put the keys into my pretty much unmolested 142e, with a sense of pride, knowing I own a part of Volvo that the majority will never experience.

Yeah, I'm getting the same feeling. My 1973 142 with 144000 original miles on it, has been out of commission for almost a year. Decided to do some major work and it has taken longer than expected. But it's running now and it's a nice sound. After they stopped making the 240s, Volvo just wasn't the same. Not to disparage the newer models but it's like the difference in composing a three page letter and sending it to your friend via USPS, vs sending a four sentence email to your entire mailing list about your views on capitalism. It just ain't the same.

yeah they are a nice car had to sell mine. but never fear, i bought a volvo 940 that i really love, it may not be a 145 wagon but it is a pretty and solid car. But to each person they have thier preferences and favorites. it was a nice car But it went to a good home. and i like my 940 there is no comparison. i had my 145 a long time but a collector bought it to restore, and he too is a brickster I say volvos forever!

Hi Guys,
My son & I came down from Canada and experienced much the same feeling as you all have, too many "Bling" cars and very few "Good Old Volvo's".Mind you those Yellow 850's were sweet !
Hopefully I will have my 1972 142S finished in time for next year's show.
Cheers,
Dave

I hope you got that trailer hitch installed, Id totally dig seeing your 140 at the show next year, and yes to all lets fly our 140 colors next year. I will be posting a few months before it happens so get your heaps there. no matter what there condition. The swap meet parking lot is by far a more honest reflection of daily driven Volvo's, then the fluffy car show. Actually one of the cars that caught my eye was a 71 145 that had green original paint that had been painted some non volvo brown. It was missing parts and reaked of high mileage. and was parked on the street, yet it spoke more Volvo than alot of the other cars that appeared to be more on the shelf than out on the road.

I know the guy that owns that once green now brown 145 wagon. I helped him get the carbs running because he doesn't know how to tune them. It was for sale, but he had no takers.

If I have it running by next year I'll be there with my franken Volvo, 71e in a 70 142s shell.

I noticed the same thing, except the part about having no 140's in IPD's show. My finished white 68 145 was in the show (#22), and while I didn't win anything, it was the ONLY 140 I saw in the entire show. This year it was at least 2/3's FWD, 5-6 240's, handful of 1800's, a one Amazon wagon. It was a bit disappointing.

Also, there were only a few swap meet stalls this year, maybe half what I saw last year.

I'm more convinced than ever that good 140's are more rare that ES's these days.

I stand corrected car #22 was a 140. I took notice of the rally dash cluster, nice ride. I was lost in thinking about 142 and 144 sedans and spaced the 145's. Lets hope that next year more 140s will be there to show some Volvo history, with that there could have been alot more 120's to complete the picture.

Makes all the work I'm putting into my 145 seem a whole lot more worth it. Even if it won't be a show car its old, noisy and keep chugging along.

This is pretty much exactly what I would have said about my 145.

I hope to make it next year, and have the 145 in decent enough shape to put it in the show anyway - Even if it will never be a "show" car.

I agree with your post. I am hoping to do some cosmetic work on my 145 this coming year and be able to put her in the show next year. She won't be a "show" car but it sure will be fun! Especially if I have some company!

Dennis, are you in???

We need somebody to remember this conversation next year a couple of months ahead of time and start a new thread reminding all of use to get our act together!!

Take Care,
Wayne

Assuming he doesn't have to strip the paint for a SECOND time, Madeline will be there - stroked SBF and all. :-)
Must say, I sure do miss the old Madeline though.

Wayne - I understand Bella went to Lee. Say it isn't so.

I'll make sure to post a reminder a few months before hand. My location in Portland means I'm pretty aware of when Volvo stuff in the area is coming up.

Man, what an improvement goal to strive for! Imagine 3 145's at the show! Let's begin nudging the FWD's back where they belong!

If all goes well, I'll be towing the 444 down as well :) Only if it's running and driving though! It's in the midst of a 5-cylinder conversion, so it'll definitely be a toss-up. The project is on hold right now until the 145 has been put back together. Not a fan of trailer queens!

That'll help get the ratio right.

Gotten a lot of positive feedback from this thread. I'd say lets make 2011 the year of the 140 and saturate the IPD show with em!

I like your spirit!
Would be great if we could do something similar on the east coast.
Perhaps at the FCP meet later this year...
I'm planning on taking my year round dd '70 145 there.
