Distributer rebuild and Pertronix question 120-130

Hi guys - two related questions if I may.

1) Any recommendation on where to get my distributor rebuilt?

2) Tips on selecting the right Pertronix unit for the distributor. What stamping or identifying marks on the distributor should I be looking for?

Thanks!

Distributer rebuild and Pertronix question 120-130

I suggest you also have a look at the 123 ignition distributor. It's a brand new direct replacement electronic ignition distributor with the maps for the various Volvo camshafts.

Extreme amount of money to pay for something that doesn't work properly on a modified engine.

Distributer rebuild and Pertronix question 120-130

They're not particularly expensive, especially if someone is going to shell out for a Pertronix and a dizzy rebuild. The advance curves match the Volvo originals. It'll give the same curve/maximum advance as the OEM distri9butor, but it has the option of choosing which factory curve to use.

Neither a 123 or the OEM distributor will give fully adjustable ignition curves.

A stock distrubutor can be changed to anything, not so a 123.

Distributer rebuild and Pertronix question 120-130

What's the number on the ID plate on your distributor? Something like 0231 146 003.

Cheers,

Distributer rebuild and Pertronix question 120-130

The stamping on the distributor is;

0 231 170 086
JFU4.

The Pertronix unit I have on hand is 1847V, but that came with a bunch of parts...

Those 123 ignitions are pretty neat, but last time I checked were a touch spendy. Have they come down in price much over the last 12 months?

Thanks for the help guys!

Distributer rebuild and Pertronix question 120-130

To the extent one can trust cross reference material available on the ‘net, that distributor likely came from a ’73 or ’74 B20B. The Pertronix 1847V should fit. A word of advice from someone that learned the hard way – don’t remove the vacuum retard unit, just don’t connect the hose, and plug the carb/manifold spigot, if you haven’t done so already.

If you post the engine number, George Downs can likely tell you the year of the engine.

Distributer rebuild and Pertronix question 120-130

Any machine shop can replace and size any sleeve bearing. You can do it yourself on-the-quick by making a fine diagonal cut [hobby saw] across a bearing, then shim it to size it to the shaft.

Early B18D had dual advance design. Centrifugal advance is spring controlled; spring tension adjustable, on a sliding arrangement. Vacuum advance is adjustable
also. nameplate VJU4BL33

Later B18 󞩝-on] centrifugal only, had different designations [ VJU ???], different curves according to the old manuals. Probably different springs. All looked alike to me, except for the ID plates [riveted to the case].

Distributer rebuild and Pertronix question 120-130

Thanks for the quick response. I've got enough on my plate right now so farming it out is awfully attractive.

I should have mentioned that I have a B20 of unknown specification in her... Sorry.

Distributer rebuild and Pertronix question 120-130

I have an almost complete (just missing a wire and a resistance) 1975 Volvo B20 electronic distributor-kit available.

You can email me at rochebleue(AT)hotmail(DOT)com if interested.

Thanks.

Another distributor option 120-130

Hello,

FYI, for the ultimate in adjust-ability, a machine shop 3 doors down from mine makes custom dual point distributors.

They cost $500.00 and use a trick fully adjustable mechanical advance mechanism.

He builds them with needle bearings for the lower end of the shaft and a ball bearing for the upper half, good to 10,000+ RPMs.

For an additional charge, he can make them with an magnetic pickup for use with compatible electronic ignition systems.

Also for an additional charge, a retard option is available in case you have forced induction or nitrous oxide.
