Replace Windshield -Keep Chrome Moulding ? 200 1980

I have a 1980 242 and will be replacing the windshield soon. I want to keep the chrome moulding to preserve the "classic vintage" look. From what I understand, the only windshield currently available is the later style that come with the black rubber trim attached. Can I use this "new" windshield, and simply remove the attached black rubber, and then keep my chrome moulding ? Thanks.

Mike

Windshield is still available from many sources. Safe-Lite will sell you the molding clips you need right over the counter, even if your glass shop says they can't find them. Rubber molding cannot be easily removed from the trim surround. Two types of late glass available: One with the flush molding attached--that one is very smooth and flat; a second style where the flush molding is installed later--has a small ridge in it. The flush molding/later style basically disappears on the dark color cars and it's not that evident something is missing. On light color cars I like to stick with the OEM surround. I've had the anodized finish polished lightly or stripped and polished right down to the aluminum to bring back the luster, depending on how discolored/tarnished/oxidized it is.
