Has anybody installed the ipd cam for their non-turbo 240? Is it worth it. What about the cam gear. Is there and notable performance?

Not to answer your question exactly but, I have a K cam in a '91 B230F and in a '79 B21F and they are improved as highway cruisers, and a little doggier at low rpm. VX3's in a couple of turbos. Either I have forgotten any difference they make (possible) or it is kind of a small improvement, or both. Worth it....well depends on values and so forth.

A turbo cam just isn't going to be happy unless you're forcing air into it.

Best bang for your buck is to get an A-cam and adjustable gear from Avalanche Performance (.com). Great package for not that much. I've go mine set 2* advanced on the '90 245 with manual trans. Pulls much better, for much longer, and smoother to boot. Helps that it opens the intake valve before TDC, instead of after it like with the stupid stock smog cam. :-)

If you do swap your cam, make provisions to adjust the valve shims. Either rent the IPD shim kit, or plan to have the car out of commission for a few days while you get/order/wait for replacement shims. Worth getting some fresh hushers and a new "hockey puck" seal for the back of the head.

In my case, the valve clearance was *huge* (like twice max specified) for all 8 valves with the A-cam compared to the original ("M") cam. I installed the cam and measured the clearances one weekend, and waited 'til the next weekend for the new shims to come in the mail.

ryan, how big a hit did your fuel economy take with the cam swap?

To new to say... it's only been about 4 weeks, and these days I get 3-4 weeks out of a tank of gas.

Most folks say that mileage stays the same.... unless you're driving it harder, which is a lot easier to do when the engine stays happy revving higher.

In theory, mileage shouldn't really change for a given speed and gear. The combustion chamber still has the same volume, so it's sucking the same amount of air per mile, which requires the same amount of fuel.

-Sorry to dig up an old thread-
Ryan_R: can you give an update on how the car is doing with the A-cam? I am looking at doing the same upgrade on my high-compression B23F and I would like to hear your thoughts on tractability and fuel economy.

Thanks,
Nick

I'm loving it! The B230F is just not a happy motor with the M-cam... it's got a narrow power band, and it gets rear grumpy when you're not in it. The auto transmissions do a good job of keeping you in it, whereas it's real easy to scoot past the power band with the manual transmission.

The A-cam has a much wider power band, and pulls smoother and harder (especially above 2500rpm) throughout. Only problem is that it it's real easy to find yourself in still in 3rd gear at 50mph..... with the old cam, the engine was begging for an upshift at 30mph. :-)

Fuel economy has the potential to remain unchanged.... if you can can keep your foot out of the gas.

One more question regarding the cam swap: are you still running stock exhaust?

Thanks again,
Nick

Stock exhaust: Bosal headpipe, Bosal cat, Starla behind the cat. Can't wait to get an actual Volvo kit instead of the farging Starla kit!

The A-cam is Volvo cam designed for these motors, so the stock exhaust should be good 'nuff.

why not get a muffler bypass ala turbo style exhaust?

I just don't see the advantage... seems most folks seem to agree that the advantage is non-existent. It's just louder and more expensive. The IPD kit has Starla stamped all over it.... don't get me started on my Starla diatribe! :-)

turbo exhaust is slightly larger diameter and it does flow better. supposedly good with a cam swap. it's pretty easy to piece up your own rather than buying the kit from ipd.

take your foot off the gas pedal, because ohio cops can now give you tickets just by guesstimating your speed.

Yup! Plus there's been a huge police presence on the stretch of highway near our house lately.

Fortunately I got all of the fast driving out of my system when I was younger! :-)

Still, if wander into the wrong town in the flat parts of the state....
