timing belt cover on 240 dl /89 200

/89 240 dl rwd noise coming from inside timing belt cover. Sounds like a vibration or a rattle or a slight knocking. any ideas from that description would be appreciated. 400k

    timing belt cover on 240 dl /89 200

    It may just be the belt tensioner. Remove the rubber in the cover, start the engine, and CAREFULLY place a stethoscope-type tool (like a long screw driver) against the tensioner nut and put your ear to the other end. A bad tensioner bearing will be obvious.

    Note, be darn careful around the rotating fan, pulleys, etc,

    Some have reported warpage and cracks that might bring it into the path of the Cam or intermediate gear.

      timing belt cover on 240 dl /89 200

      Pull the timing belt cover. Start the engine. See what's clanking. I found a broken intermediate shaft gear once so anything's possible.
