surging at idle...cold start injector??? 200 1990

Son is moving to BIG CITY (Austin) and needs a reliable car for the girlfriend (He has loaned her his 93 245, which runs fine). She has a 90 245 which I have broken many a brain cell ( and fingernails) trying to get it going so she won't buy a Honda like she wants to.
I've replaced the timing belt, removed and cleaned the throttle body and IAC motor and the cold start injector, replaced all the drive belts, given it a tune up ( plugs, wires etc), new Oxygen sensor, and it still idles like a banshee in heat.
I've read the FAQ's, the search for older posts to no avail.
I've only got 2 weeks to figure it out before the move occurs for good.
HELP!!! Art Bernstein!!!
thanks,
el raidman

You can disconnect the cold start injector electrical connector to eliminate that as a concern. Make sure the Throttle body and IAC valve is clean and operational and all the vacuum lines are free flowing and not plugged.

Will the unplugging the electrical connection make it harder to start? I imagine it will be harder in really cold weather. But here in South Texas, we are pretty warm already (80 degrees F.) I'll try it tonight after work, then let it sit overnight and hope for the best tomorrow morning.

Rarely needed if ever in the south. If you have a 951 ECU it does not control a cold start injector, the 951 adds fuel to all injectors if needed on a cold start.

Tell him to get in contact with myself and Kourt99 once he gets to Austin. We'll give him a hand with his vehicle(s) whenever we can.

Thanks!! He has helped me do his own Volvo repairs all his life...I've had nothing but Bricks since 1975. So he has been a lifelong Volvo man (born in 1979).
I'll pass on the welcome advice.
BTW, my wife and I are thinking about retiring to Austin also. I need to buy a house that has a garage or at least a carport to fix the 5 240's and 740's in the family. I figure a lift is out of the question with the neighbors, but 2 giant hydralic jacks should be enough?
      Thanks again,

    It surges or idles high?

Check the connector on the Throttle positioning Sensor. Disconnested, that can make the car idle a bit high or erratic.
Have you sprayed around te Intake manifold in search of a Vacuum/gasket leak?

Normal idle once heated up. Surges during warm up and smells like gasoline. I'll do the leak test for the injectors tomorrow. I have a set of 4 that are in teh shop undergoing cleaning. Will try to replace them the following weekend.
      Thanks,

I feel your pain sir...I have been troubleshooting a high, erratic, intermittent idle problem for months on my 91 wagon as well. As we speak, he is in my garage now being teated for symptoms of high breather pressure. I am changing the front seals due to sudden leakage. While I have him down I decided to remove the intake manifold to inspect further for the cause of this dastardly problem. I did notice evidence of a leaking intake manifold gasket when I removed it...the gasket was crumbly and there was streaking in the cylinder head in some areas indicating some leakage. I am cleaning the excessive gunk out of the breather box hoping to restore some sense to my vacuum system??? I have changed my IAC, ECU, cleaned the throttle body, inspected for leaks in the intake ducts....only thing I haven't done is checked for continuity in the throttle position switch (it is clicking when it is supposed to, just not sure if it is making). Another symptom I have is an increase in idle when I apply the brake to shit out of park. My shift safety switch is giving me problems right now (having to use the override)...maybe this is an indicator to the cause???? I need a miracle as I put this back together...

I share the pain! I've replaced the throttle body with a known good one and a NEW intake gasket, so no leaks there..maybe in a vacuum line somewhere?

Well, I just got in from the garage, changed intake manifold gasket, timing belt, seals, removed and cleaned gunk out of breather box, reassembled and started the wagon...so far no high, erratic idle. I am driving it to work tomorrow, I'll let you know what happens.

The increase in idle when you apply the brake might make it worth testing to make sure your problem isn't caused by a vacuum leak in the brake booster. I would try pulling the big vacuum hose/one way valve out of the break booster and plugging it while it idles.

Idle Air Control valve, or leaks in ducts?... 200 1990

I'd suspect the IAC, or some leak in the 2 ducts between the air filter and throttle body (the ribbed, 2nd one is the likely one -- it often splits).

    Good luck.

You know, I have an extra one sitting right here looking at me! I'll replace the intake bellows on the car later on today!
      Thanks,
