My 95 960 seems to have multiple fluid leaks that I am trying to troubleshoot.

First, there is a coolant leak. I had the heater core hoses replaced, and the leak was still there after hose replacement, although slower. I tightened the worm drives clamps on the hoses more, and the leak slowed, so this may be the leak source. How careful need I be on tightening these hoses? Concerned it may be the upper rad neck. Is a full on pressure test the better way to go now?

Second, I have an oil leak in the general area of the oil filter. I changed the oil and filter, cleaned the mating surfaces, and made sure the filter was tight, but the leak continues. What is above the oil filter or in that area that could be the source of the oil leak. Does the oil filter screw into the oil pump?

Third, I have a brake fluid leak. It comes from under the master cylinder. I think it may be the brake portioning valve. Any ideas on how to be sure here?

I will DIY it with a mechanic friend, but I generally have to diagnose the cause and buy the part for this arrangement to work. Problems piling up with this car. Ideas appreciated.

After some work, I have figured most of it out. I replaced the oil cooler o rings, and that was the cause of the oil leak.

The coolant seems to be leaking behind the block at the trumpet. How hard is that to replace? I hear it is a tight to get at the trumpet.

The fellow who did the work said the leak is behind the block in an aluminum pipe set that is one unit. I think the coolant temp sensor plugs into it. It is apparently known as the 'trumpet' by Volvo mechanics here. Not sure what the technical term is.

if you have a plastic radiator, it may be the retaining nut on the hose fitting or the trans coolant fitting. If you have a brass radiator it could be the solder joint on th fitting- you can tell by a little streak of coolant leaki ng out of the fitting-

the brake fluid leak may be caused by a small crack at the connector on the resevoir- at times the resevoir gets a small hairline crack in it and it's hard to detect it.

The coolant leaks I've had our B6304's were : a bad coolant reservoir cap and a heater hose behind the engine where the rubber hose clamps to the steel lines.

Above the oil filter is a plate that has 2 screws in it, behind it is a large oval O-ring. It's a few bucks, replace it and you may have found your oil leak above the filter.

The o ring replacement sounds like a good idea. If I were to order it from the dealer, what would it be called? If I remove the plate to change to oring, will I need to have the full drain pan under it?

Hey, thanks for the offer. I ended up going to the dealer and getting them new. It only cost about $15 in total. I hope to put them in on Sunday, if my friend who has the hoist is willing to lend a hand.

I don't remember what it was called or what the P/N was on our '95 960, there is also a large O-ring holding the oil filter fitting on. You remove that big nut holding the fitting on and there is an O-ring between it and the engine block as well.

based on the endless litany of troubles your post here about your 960 over many many months. sell it and find a 940. that's my advice.

of course you're right. i have had many 940 and 240's that leaked badly, but not after i got finished with them. my caustic remark is meant to under score the cost and hassle the 960 offers its owner every time they start it up as result of an engine design i think anyway is more trouble than its worth.

Thanks for the input. This is a medium mileage car that has regular maintenance and wear issues. I post as issues arise and appreciate the assistance of brickboarders. It has been recently appraised at 18 times market value, so I have not plans to sell it.
