Part it out? Or? 1990 245 200

Hi all,

I've got a 1990 245 M37 that just needs too much work after serial neglect by previous owners. It needs all of the suspension tended to except the rear shocks, blower motor squeals, power windows aren't working (just switches, though), door locks don't function properly, odometer broken (has around 200,000 miles), etc. The body is solid (doors and fenders are solid & rust-free), I replaced the AMM recently, so there are no codes, engine has decent compression, but tranny isn't terribly smooth, and interior isn't great. The car has a "rebuilt" title.

I'm wondering if the value of the parts would make it worth parting out vs. just sending to the scrap yard? Maybe just try to sell it whole (it runs and has passed our smog test) for a couple hundred? My SO isn't fond of having a carcass in the yard for a long period of time, either--need to maintain domestic tranquility.

Thoughts?

I hope you can find a 240-lover to give you $200 for this. You might get more if you wanted to start removing parts one by one, but for that work, you might as well repair it.

If you were on the same side of the continent as I, I'd spend the money for a bus ticket to your driveway, give you the $200 and drive the puppy home!

Best wishes for domestic and automotive tranquility!

["What you need to work on is making your SO more comfortable with a car carcass in the driveway"
Please explain how to do this.]

Okay -- you got me, I don't know how to do this: my SO doesn't mind car carcasses in the driveway. What she minds is how much time I spend out in the garage, although she does concede the point that I keep the cars reliable and the family mobile for very little financial outlay. Maybe it's best to simply present to the SO the advantages to keeping a spare car around. As a word of warning, it's best not to have a few beers before you do this.

I've stored cars with land-owning friends and relatives before.

I've seen the body of an '89 245. They were very well rust proofed, galvanized. The floor under the carpeting is in "new" condition. Definitely will last years more.

It passed smog test, is a standard, and (I think) has LH2.4.

So don't send it to the crusher. Better to sell it to someone who will rescue it.

If it's rust free and the paint looks OK everything else can be fixed. 5 speed wagons are desirable.

For what it's worth I brought my present parts car which runs, has 160K but is rusted out and had a BHG for $200. Far more than the $70 the junk yard offered the PO.

I would be inclined to keep the car if you want to continue running 240s for a while, as it's not rusty. What you need to work on is making your SO more comfortable with a car carcass in the driveway: it's a Volvo carcass, and as such is not trashy. Neighbors and passers-by will think that you are a practical, renaissance man -- a good type of person to have in the neighborhood.

I recently picked up a nice '88 740 5 speed wagon from the original owner (it's been nicely kept up at the dealer, so I can stay on top of the maintenance and issues as they arise), otherwise I'd probably stick with a 240. There isn't enough parts interchangeability to make it worthwhile to keep the 240 around. It's got life in it for the right person, so I hope to sell it complete, and that's now my plan.

          Thanks for the input, everyone.
