electrical weirdness 200 1987

1987 245. The wipers run intermittently with the wiper switch(es) off. Some times they run continiously, sometimes like they were on intermittent. The rear runs more often than the front. It seems like hitting a bump tends to trigger the unintended wiping. The operation of either wiper seems to be independent of the other. They may run for several minutes before stopping or they might just make a single sweep (one or two sweeps is slightly more likely for the front wipers).

If the headlights are off, the wipers will not run (on their own). Turning the headlights off will not stop the wipers if they are running.

Possible red herring: the past few days the system voltage was low when I started the car (gauge said so, headlights were dim, and the wipers were slow). By the time I backed up and started moving forward the system voltage came up to normal levels. The wipers only started acting up today.

I'm going to have a look at the wiring diagrams. If someone knows what's wrong or has a direction to look, please let me know.

Thanks

Greg

I just solved a weird electrical thing myself... my culprit was a blown fuse located on the driver's side kick panel. Don't know if it will help...

If you suspect the wiring harness I have one in excellent condition I bought for my 86 wagon. I never installed it because I picked up a newer wagon for a song. Drop me a note, etcigar@yahoo.com if you're interested.

I think the problem was corrosion in the connector at the front wiper motor. No problem was found in the wiring. What that made both wiper motors run with the headlights on, I have no idea. Short term, they have not come on again without intending them to work.

I took the cover off the wiper motor cleaned the ground contact and no change.

The wire s for the right headlight run in the same loom as the wires for the wiper motor. Unclipped the wiring harness, pushed on the wires for the motor and the wipers act normal ( for five minutes). Seems like a chafed wire in the harness. I'll cut it open tomorrow.

Q1 What has me stumped is how does the power feed back into the rear wiper ?

I'm having a little trouble figuring out the wiring diagrams. The switch for the rear wiper is shown on a seperate page with a yellow and black wire ending in an arrow with a note 10/1. I'm assuming that 10/1 means the no.1 fuse in component no.10.

The two wires shown coming out of fuse 10 go to the radio and the cigar lighter. There are two wires coming off fuse 1 on my car.

Q2 How does power actually get to the rear wiper switch ? It would make sense to power it with the windshield wiper switch, but that is not how it is shown.

    Thanks

    Greg

    Hi Greg,

My congratulations on your lift installation. Certainly all your 240 problems will now move up and out from under the car in alliance with Murphy.

The wiper motor has a rotating cam and contact that keeps power on the motor until the contact says it's parked, after the stalk switch is turned off. Sounds like that's where it is messing up. Most common trouble, with these is a poor ground, but I don't know if that's symptom related. I really don't have much experience with wipers, or it has been too many years ago. Here are some references.

I don't know if the main wiring harness in the engine has any
effect on the wipers. The early 240 model up to year 1988 had
an inferior wiring harness. The place that I would check to see
if the wiring harness is bad is at the wires at the coil. That
is where I first noticed my wires exposed and the plastic coating
cracking apart. Another place is where the wires from the instrument
cluster area enters the engine compartment, there is a white plug
in the engine area right behind the instrument cluster. That plug
has about half-dozen wires on each side of the plug, check the wires
at that plug for deterioration. If they are exposed/cracking open
then I am the bearer of bad news....Sorry.
